DIY pond filter-can I bypass the pump so 'muck' does not clog it up! advice !?

OK - I am going to make a small (maybe 6' x 8', 1 1/2 deep) pond for 5 ducks. And they poo in the water. Im no newbie to bio filtration so the filter in question I got down - its the water getting there! Pond will be dug in ground, so pump & bio box will be out of pond, above ground.
My initial idea was to take a (GOOD size) pool pump and pump water from pond, into top or a rain barrel/box/whatever with plants/lava rock/sand blah blah blah and 'waterfal ' it back into pond - the barrel/box would be raised up from pond a bit to easily drain into pond.....QUESTION , no PROBLEM is all the duck poo & crap in the water will be going straight through the pump impeller, not the greatest idea. If I make a pre-media filter, all the crap will be stuck in that...I might be thinking this up all wrong (new project Im in brain furry wanting to do it, and its no big fancy thing, just keeping my duckie swimming hole cleanish) and Im googleing to no avail...Id appreciate input or links. Ive been trying to find a something with making a bypass to pump the water, ? _ I dont know with a bypass around the actual pump?? Thanks guys!
btw - was thinking about putting the pump in/at/by the bottom of the barrel/box drawing water through bio filter from pond...tube will connect barrel/ box to pond at the top but trying to pull water through all that bio stuff might just burm it out and make it work to hard, yes??

classic problem with circulating water. If you make a large pre-media filter or screen you can extend the time between cleaning, but there is no way around the fact that the suction created through pumping will draw and hold material to that filter or screen. If you don't want to clear that material off the screen and remove it from the pond on a regular interval, you'll need a second, reverse flow of water that would push the material back off the screen with sufficient force to relocate it far enough away and disperse it enough to buy more time between clearing/cleaning. The result will be dirty murky water, which it sounds like isn't a major concern for you in this application.

If you want to get fancy, you could probably get a device to monitor the flow of water out of the pump and trigger a second pump with outflow aimed back out the screening device in a wide angle spray. The switch would remain active until the primary pump water pressure returned to normal, and you might have a more or less automatic method to clear the screen off.

But I would probably just go with a large basket style mesh screen of whatever the right size holes is for your water content, that screens the larger gunk that would foul the impeller. Then just clean it off with a garden hose out of the pond so it doesn't just come right back. the gunk is probably nice organic matter you can fertilize your flowers with anyway, right?

Can anyone tell me how Automatic Gold Dredgers work?

I have been trying to figure out how something that separates the gold from the mud/sand work??

and i am getting NO WERE, lol.

Can someone explain it to me?

No prob, I live in gold country. There are the floating self sustaining dredges. They are fairly small dredges on floats. They are usually anchored. There's a suction hose that acts similarly to an automatic pool cleaning device. It moves around the bottom and deposits the silt i.e. mud/sand into a shaker box where water is continually run through. Since gold is more dense/heavier than sand/mud it tends to not be washed away. It all has to do with the periodic table of elements and their mass. What it comes down to is a filtering action where the heaviest particles stay and the lighter slag is washed away. There's also a less autonomous system where a diver uses the suction hose and manually vacuums the bottom. Hope it helps.

Pool automatic chlorine feeder not feeding, can I fix it?

I have DE filter pump
It has a 1&1/2 feet tall automatic chlorine feeder two years old. It is not feeding the chlorine tablets I put in it. It was working until few months before. It is on position. Water fills in it when the pump on but the chlorine tablets remain same level for ling time now. It is Pentair model 320
Why? Can I fix it?

Hi There,

the device works by flowing a controlled amount of water into the device, through the chlorine tablets then back into the pipe ( through the control valve) then to the pool.

You can probably fix the chlorinator yourself by shutting down the pump and letting the water drain out.

Next remove the chlorine tablets and look inside for a clogged screen or possibly the check valve is plugged.

Note:The device should fill with water when the pump is turned on through the check valve but the check valve should not let the water go back down when the pump is turned off.

It is very possible the chlorine control valve has small bits of tablets or dust, dirt , etc that is not letting the water flow normally through the tablets and out through the outlet tube.

I am sure that when you clean everything out, check the screen and control valve and make sure the check valve lets water in but not out you will solve the problem.

Does anybody know of some sort of inexpensive siphon filtering device to clean my horse's water trough?

My horse's water trough gets dirt in it often and settles on the bottom and its such a hassle to empty it out all the time and just get the dirt out or trying to get the dirt out with a net. I was wondering if there are any kind of devices that kind of act like a vacuum that can just suck up the dirt through a tube or something and cleans up the dirt. I guess kind of like an automatic pool cleaner. It would be nice if it could be inexpensive whatever it is. If anyone has any ideas please help me . Thank you!

Four suggestions:

1. From the kitchen gadgets section, get one of those very close mesh strainers - they come in all sizes. You dip it in, fish out the debris, and let the water run out.

2. Aquarium supplies - a fine mesh fish net. Same process.

3. Car supplies - they have inexpensive siphons for getting gas out of gas tanks. Use it to siphon out the dirt.

4. Any flexible hosing will also work. Get about a 4 to 6 foot piece, put one end in the bottom of the tank. Suck on the other end until the water comes about 3/4 of the way (Clear hose is best! available at hardware store) then quickly put that end on the ground. Gravity will siphon out as much water and debris as you need to.

These are all really inexpensive things that can help do the job. Good Luck!

Why might my computer be powering down?

I built this machine about 18 months ago. since it's been built, I've had a problem with BSoDs. Usually it's things like
Bad pool caller
IRQ Not Equal or Greater
Trying to write to non paged area
Memory Management

If I power down the machine and restart it, I don't have anymore BSoDs for the rest of the day. The machine runs fine.

Recently (as in the past couple of weeks) my machine has begun powering off without any notice. One moment it's on, the next it's off. After restarting the machine, it sometimes shuts down again. Sometimes it's immediate, sometimes later. The one thing I've found to be consistent with the shut downs is that it happens while I'm playing a graphic-intensive game (WoW, SWTOR, etc).
The BSoDs I'm not concerned with. I'd like some advice about the shutdowns.

When did you last clean your computer from dust.......

You say that if tends to happen when you play games, meaning the CPU and videocard are put under strain, making sure that your case and heatsinks are free from dust will help....
This could be down to a heat issue...

Unless you have a major problem with your power supply, that unit should be fine.

Once Chlorine Has Been Put In A Pool, How Long Must You Wait?

Q. Please excuse me spelling with 'Chlorine.'. But how long do you have to wait after Chlorine has been put into a pool?

Yes, it really depends on how much chlorine you are adding. Automatic chlorinators add chlorine as needed 24/7, so there is almost always more chlorine going into a pool which has that sort of device.

As long as the pool's chlorine level is less than about 5ppm (parts-per-million) then it would be safe to enter immediately. If you've super-chlorinated (shocked) the pool and taken it up to 20ppm or more, you would need to wait until that came down. It can be done quickly by adding a de-chlorinizer. Otherwise, it takes a while, possibly a day or two. Longer in an indoor pool.

Chlorine is consumed (used up) in two ways: the one you want most is it's reaction with organic matter, which 'burns' (oxidizes) it and vaporizes off the pool surface.

Chlorine is photo-sensitive, meaning that sunlight will also activate the chlorine and deplete it from the pool.

Some chlorine products include cyanuric acid which acts as a 'buffer' against chlorine reaction. The good news is that it slows down the reaction with sunlight and keeps you from using up a lot of chlorine. That bad news is that it also slows down the reaction with organics, which means your pool does not stay as clean. Lots of cyanuric acid in your pool will keep the chlorine levels high for a longer period.

So there are a lot of variables. The only way to be sure is to use a professional type detection kit and measure the chlorine level yourself. People saying 'an hour' or 'two hours' are using a rule-of-thumb that may or may-not apply to your situation.

No prob, I live in gold country. There are the floating self sustaining dredges. They are fairly small dredges on floats. They are usually anchored. There's a suction hose that acts similarly to an automatic pool cleaning device. It moves around the bottom and deposits the silt i.e. mud/sand into a shaker box where water is continually run through. Since gold is more dense/heavier than sand/mud it tends to not be washed away. It all has to do with the periodic table of elements and their mass. What it comes down to is a filtering action where the heaviest particles stay and the lighter slag is washed away. There's also a less autonomous system where a diver uses the suction hose and manually vacuums the bottom. Hope it helps.

Does anybody know of some sort of inexpensive siphon filtering device to clean my horse's water trough?

My horse's water trough gets dirt in it often and settles on the bottom and its such a hassle to empty it out all the time and just get the dirt out or trying to get the dirt out with a net. I was wondering if there are any kind of devices that kind of act like a vacuum that can just suck up the dirt through a tube or something and cleans up the dirt. I guess kind of like an automatic pool cleaner. It would be nice if it could be inexpensive whatever it is. If anyone has any ideas please help me . Thank you!

Four suggestions:

1. From the kitchen gadgets section, get one of those very close mesh strainers - they come in all sizes. You dip it in, fish out the debris, and let the water run out.

2. Aquarium supplies - a fine mesh fish net. Same process.

3. Car supplies - they have inexpensive siphons for getting gas out of gas tanks. Use it to siphon out the dirt.

4. Any flexible hosing will also work. Get about a 4 to 6 foot piece, put one end in the bottom of the tank. Suck on the other end until the water comes about 3/4 of the way (Clear hose is best! available at hardware store) then quickly put that end on the ground. Gravity will siphon out as much water and debris as you need to.

These are all really inexpensive things that can help do the job. Good Luck!

We should look at the P value for each of the slope parameters and in doing so, we find that price is 100% significant, average income (Mavg) is 96.6% (100-.034) and price of competition (Ph) is 97.2% significant (100-.028).


4. Discuss the appropriateness and/or interpretations of the algebraic signs of the three slope parameters, based on your theoretical expectations. Interpret the numerical values of the three slope parameters in the context of this regression.


5. Now evaluate the overall fit of the estimated (sample) regression equation to the data.

a. What percentage of variability in Qd (linear) is explained by a model? Does it indicate a good overall fit? Please, explain.


b. Verify whether the overall regression equation is statistically significant, another words, verify the goodness of overall fit .What is the exact level of significance for the entire regression equation?

Looking at the F stat which is 211.1, we can say the overall regression equation is significant since the absolute value is large. Also, the P value is 0 so there is no chance that this regression equation doesnât explain the relationship between the given variables and quantity demanded.

All of your answers are good. To say that the F statistic has a large absolute value is a little vague; one would generally either consult an F table to the appropriate threshold value or just look at the P value in the computer output. On the other hand, it isn't wrong, and if your instructor taught it that way you should leave it in.

Regarding the questions you haven't answered, number 4 refers to the direction of the effects on your dependent variable that come with changes in the independent variables. You should look at your coefficients and consider what would happen if you changed the values in your variables. For example, if the price of the product goes up, demand for the product goes down because of the negative coefficient associated with the price variable. If this seems confusing, try plugging in some different values into the equation and calculating the result. The negative coefficient makes sense, because people are going to be less interested in buying something if its more expensive. The question is asking you to evaluate both the actual effects on demand and the expected effects for each of the variables.

Question 5a refers to the R-squared statistic (R-Sq), which is the percent of explained variability as mentioned in the question. Yours is quite high.
