I recently moved to a new place that has an inground pool. It has 25,000 gallons of water and an automatic pool cleaner.

I am looking for an automatic pool cleaner, but i found out that there are two type. one is in ground and one is abover ground. I dont know what's the different between the two.

It's referring to the type of pool you have. Above-ground cleaners mainly cover the bottom of the pool. Since the sides in most inground pools have either curves or slopes between the floor and the walls, (above-ground pools usually have right angles) the cleaners are generally able to climb the walls and clean them as well. (And, generally there will be a big price difference between the two types; in-ground cleaners generally cost a lot more.

Question for Inground pool owners?

We are a family of 4 and wanting to buy a house with an inground pool. We have never owned a house with a pool before, so we are basically clueless as to what all it entails. I know we would use the pool a lot. So, we were wondering:

1. How much is upkeep (pool service, chemicals, etc.)
2. How much does it add to your house taxes
3. We live in Arizona, so would it be beneficial to have saltwater or chlorine
4. Anything else we need to consider / advice

1. I've found that upkeep costs differ from season to season; we'll spend far more on the pool during the swimming season than in the winter months. I have an in-ground gunite, and in the summer, ballpark cost figure I would guess would be $500 total. No pool service or hired cleaner; we do it all ourselves. Again, this is an estimate!!! It depends a lot on where you buy your supplies, how often you use your pool, etc.

2. I am not aware of any huge chunk it costs to our property taxes, if anything at all. Hell, our homeowner's insurance is only $8 a year more for our pool, and that's because we have a diving board.

3. I've heard some pretty great things about saltwater pools. Chlorine is derived from salt, so maintenance is supposed to be a lot easier and less time-consuming.

4. If you do get a pool, make sure you buy locks for all gates leading into your back yard, if they don't have any already. I use just a simple locker-combination lock on mine.

Pools can be time-consuming if you want them looking great day after day, so if you want a great looking pool but don't want to spend a lot of time on it, you should seriously reconsider. I don't consider cleaning mine a chore; I wanted a pool in my house so I consider myself responsible for it's care. It is a hobby for me, as swimming is my favorite sport.

Essential cleaning supplies: a brush, a vacuum (manual or automatic; automatic will wash hours of cleaning time off your hands), a hose that covers the length and depth of the pool, a skimmer pole, skimmer net; I have one flat one and one that's a basket, a chemical test kit to see how the chemcial levels in your water are, and a "backflow" garden hose attachment for possible clogs in your underground pipes. Depending on your pump system too, you might also require a backwash hose. Also keep in good supply of chlorine tabs (big duh, right?!), pH add and/or decrease, alkalinity plus, some filter aid (sand or DE, again depending on what kind of filter you have) and some bags of shock, just for extra measure. I don't do this myself, but I know some pool owners also keep algaecide handy, even though you only need to use that for an algae outbreak in your water. But that should only happen if you don't take care of it! And I tell you all of this because if you have to buy all that stuff at once, it will get VERY expensive. We specifically looked for a pool that already had all the equipment there; we just had to buy the chemicals and even then, the water was already in pretty good shape so we didn't have to buy every single chemical all at once.

I hope I didn't ramble on too much. But I enjoy my swimming pool immensely and enjoy entertaining my friends and family with it. It's a wonderful investment, as long as you don't consider taking care of it a problem. Happy swimming!

What can i do about an above ground pool that has yellow water?

My younger sister got an above ground intex pool for her 7th birthday. It's been set up for a month now, and the water is starting to turn yellow. We bought a PH testing kit which also gives results for free chlorine, total alkalinity and stabilizer. The PH level results were 7.8, which is supposed to be pretty normal. There was absolutely no free chlorine, and the total alkalinity too high (200). The stabilizer was also far too low.
I really don't know what to do about it. We live in a city of 40,000 but there are no places here that give advice for pool care (probably because it doesn't get overly warm here in summer)
The paper that came with the testing kit suggested that we put sodium bisulfate into the pool to lower the alkalinity, but i have no idea what that is.
Does anyone know what to do about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Your PH of 7.8 sounds to be a little on the high side. I think the nominal is supposed to be around 7.2. As far as maintenance, what kind of filtration system do you have? This can make a huge difference in how clean your pool water stays. I've never used sodium bi-sulfate and couldn't even tell you what this is product does. Maybe a google search will reveal more about how it works, how to use it, and where to purchase it if you want to go that route. In my pool I've never had to add anything but chlorine, stabilizer, and occasionally a touch of algaecide. You might want to consider using an automatic chlorinator with chlorine tablets which will administer chlorine to the pool regularly. I also use granulated stabilizer administered through a nylon stocking tied off on the side of the pool to help extend the life of your chlorine in the water. This works for me, but from what you describe, I imagine your must live in a climate far different than mine. Where I live, it is now almost full-blown winter time, and outdoor swimming is an impossibility. It also gets plenty hot in the summer, with temperatures occasionally climbing up to 100, so there is always a lot of interest in swimming pools. MIne would probably be from Twilight when Edward admits he is a vampire. Bella thought she was crazy, so all he had to do is assure he wasn't and laugh it off. It would have been so much easier then causing her so many problems (which is partly her fault too.) I have the book, maybe I will post it later.

New house - how do I take care of our pool?

There's really not much detail here other than the volume. I could write a book and not cover what you need. If you post back with filter type, pool type (concrtet or vinyl), heater or no heater, type of sanitizer being used and any automatic pool cleaners, it would be helpful. There's simply too many things to cover other than basic water chemistry. I usually suggest to new home owners that they get a pool service guy in once, to give them waht our company calls pool 101's. Many service companies will do this for you and it won't cost much more than a service call (50 bucks). You'll get a personalized lesson, that's good for your specific set up and equipment. Take notes and if possible videotape the lesson. Hey, don't laugh, I think I'm starring in over 100 home videos by now. This way you can review what you've learned.
I'll go over some basics, common to most pools.
1/ check your chemistry at least once week. Total alkalinity 80-120 , Ph 7.2- 7.6, Cl or Br 1.0 -3.0. Always adjust your TA before trying to adjust anything else contrary to what I see in some of these posts ( still giggling, little wonder people's pools go green)
2/ Vac out the pool on at least a weekly basis. Keeping it clean helps lower your overall chemical expenditures.
3/ Clean out you pump and skimmer baskets on at least a weekly basis and same goes for whatever filter system you are using, unless it's a DE filter, you can leave those longer.
4/ Every month or so, take a water sample into your pool shop to be tested. They test for things a typical home owner's kit doesn't. If you're developing a calcium hardness issue, total dissolved solids or a dissolved metal issue, they can nip it in the bud before any damage occurs. You should also take in a sample 2 weeks prior to closing the pool (if applicable) and within a few days of pool opening (if applicable). Helps you put the pool to bed properly and get off to a good start in spring.
That's all I can post given the info you provided. Every pool is different. I'll put this on my watch list, if you update and may be able to help further.

What Herb or Vitamin for Energy Is Best. I have pulmonary fibrosis?

Have had pulmonary fibrosis since 1999. My O2 blood oxygen level has been running 92% at the Doctor's office. I tell the Doctor it's not fair to take it when I have been resting in his office. I just want to sit here and watch TV or play poker on the computer,, no energy at all. My family depends on me to get stuff done. My wifes knees are shot. We are both 57. We have an inground pool that is getting harder and harder for me to open, close and keep up with. My family only knows I'm out of breath when I come in from working outside, they don't know how bad it is, except my daughter pulled me out of the trash can I passed out and fell in. Along with taking care of the yard, trimming my trees, normal home owner stuff, I'm shot if I exert myself. Sometimes the entire next day. I cant afford to have a pool boy and a lawn service.

Would oxygen give me more energy? My Doctor said he doesn't want to get me started on oxygen yet because I will become dependent on it. I'm sure it gets lower than the 92%, resting at the Doctors Office. I don't even have energy to get any exercise. When I bend over I get light headed, if I walk, I run out of gas. The thing is last year I was doing some walking and felt a little better, it has been a long winter here. I have gotten no exercise since last year, except running the snow blower. If I start coughing hard I pass out and wake up not knowing where I am for a few seconds. I have learned how to live with that, just don't cough, no matter how bad I need to. Ride it out and cough gently,, that works. They gave me prednisone, some ungodly amount 4 times a day, that I threw away 10 years ago... I started taking Oils after dinner every day,,, 2, 1000 flax oil gel caps, a 1000 Vitamin E gel cap, a fish oil 1000, an aloe vera (the biggest GNC has) and a Caltrate or OsCal. Sometimes, not always, I use an albuterol inhaler when I feel short of breath.

For example, my Grandson called this morning wanting to go swimming on no notice. We live in Michigan and have a short swimming season. I just got it opened a week ago but it's dirty again already. It's hard because it's surrounded with pine trees. The needles are always on the carpeted pool deck and I have to wash it off with the hose and the pool needs to be vacuumed again. Take the solar cover off full of water and put it back on... I had to tell my grandson no, now I feel bad. I don't have an automatic pool vac, I have to do it the old fashioned way, with a pole. Once I get started it's not that bad. I made some extra strong coffee and drank it till I'm bug-eyed and I still don't want to clean the pool or do anything.

So,, what herbs can I take that will give me a kick in the pants to get me started and maybe help my 02? I hate the jitters. I asked the Doctor what I could take and he said they stopped giving energy pills out in the 60's. Cheap Vitamin B12 from WalMart makes me jittery. It's only too bad the herbs are so expensive. Again, sorry to be so long, I could just use a little advice here. I feel absolutely lost and overwhelmed.

The pulmonary fibrosis came from my job as a Dental Technician. We used miles of asbestos, tearing it off a roll, sending dust from it into the air, then after burning it out at 1800 degrees or so, you use a hammer to break the mold for gold or metal crowns, surrounded with the asbestos. That sends fried particles from the asbestos into the air.The asbestos was about as thick as 2 business cards and 2 inches wide. I used that from 1969 until 1983 when they came up with a substitute. Then I had to sandblast the castings, that was really dusty using 60 micron aluminum oxide. It is so fine, if you throw a handfull into the air, it takes 3-4 minutes for it to all land. Also lots of plaster dust and grinding metal. I have also got a breath of muratic acid a couple times and blew out smoke. Anyways,, sorry, I just want you to see the whole picture. Sorry to be so long.

Can an automatic pool cleaner (a polaris) cause a leak?

I have an inground fiberglass pool and have been loosing about an inch of water a day. I read other answers and tried the bucket test and also marked the side of the pool with electrical tape to track.
I have noticed that my polaris has been shooting quite a bit of water out of the pool via splashing or getting stuck but the problem only began about a week and a half ago and I have had a polaris for years.
I completely shut the polaris off one morning before work just to test that theory. When I came home at the end of the day, the water level was fine! Then I turned the polaris on and after about an hour of running, the level dropped about a quarter of an inch.
I know water always flows through the polaris piping but could the surge in pressure after turning the polaris motor cause a minor crack to begin leaking?

Side note: my main drain line at the bottom of the pool has either clogged or collapsed but that has been the case for about a year and the pool has always looked crystal clear and maintained good water levels.
Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

If the pool only leaks when the polaris pump is running it, it is almost certainly a break in the pipe between the booster pump and the pool. When the pump is running there is a lot mor pressure in the pipe so it will leak a lot quicker.
A leak detection company should be able to pin point where the leak is, and then a pool company can dig it up and fix it.

Look for wet soil in garden beds, etc. with the pump running.
Palm trees are the biggest culprit in breaking pool pipes.

What is the best way to remove leaves and rocks from the deep end of a swimming pool?

My swimming poos is surrounded by three palm trees. As the wind blows, I get the long leaves in the pool. Also, the surrounding area is covered by decorative rock. I have tried the net, automatic pool cleaner, manually sucking them out with the pool equipment. Usually I have one of the kids swim to the bottom of the pool to get them out. Is there a better way?

a pool cover and reel would help with the leaves.a solar cover is fairly reasonable and the reel would make it easier to use.as for the rocks the kid retrieval system seems to work.you may want to see about removing the rocks from around the pool,especially if you have a vinyl liner.good luck

Simple directions for closing a pool for winter.?

Please can I use the automatic cleaner for the leafs? There are not alot of them in their however it is already too cold to go in to get them. It does get very cold here. Also can I put a plate on the skimmer instead of draining below this. I have to buy water and don't want to waste if I don't have to.

Saving the water is wise. To remove the leaves Wal Mart or any pool place has a hand net type skimmer. Remove any mechanical skimmers and pumps drain the water from them so it does not freeze in them. Drain the water level down 4 to 6 inches from the swimming level. Put cover on the pool if you have an old auto tire inner tube fill with air and float it in the center of the pool and then put the pool cover on to keep the cover from sinking into the pool water when it rains or snows and from the weight of leaves on the pool cover. Thats basicly it untill spring and you need to begin the filters again to clean and shock the poool to swim in.

we have an in ground pool with a kreepy krauly automatic cleaner. It works great, but it is continually getting caught at the corner of the steps. How can I keep this from happening? does it have something to do with the weights? The type of Kreepy that we have is the Pentair K70406 Kreepy Krauly Classic Inground Automatic Suction Pool cleaner.

I saw many Haywards for sale on eBay and they complained that it gets stuck because of the shape of their pool. So now I am looking to get a Polaris 280. Can anyone explain the difference between Polaris 280, 360, 380, and basically all the numbers? I just need a pool vacuum that will do the job without me having to interfere with it.

It's referring to the type of pool you have. Above-ground cleaners mainly cover the bottom of the pool. Since the sides in most inground pools have either curves or slopes between the floor and the walls, (above-ground pools usually have right angles) the cleaners are generally able to climb the walls and clean them as well. (And, generally there will be a big price difference between the two types; in-ground cleaners generally cost a lot more.

my husband and i are looking into purchasing an automatic pool cleaner for his parents pool since we are frequent visitors and we usually clean it for them. the one i found and like very much is the Diver Dave by Hayward. the only problem is, i don't buy anything without other customer reviews and there was none on the site i was on. if you use or own this please tell me what you think of it and if you would reccomend it!

The Diver Dave is just an Aqua Bug with different graphics on it. They've been around forever. They do an ok job on above ground pools for the price.

My Poolshark Auto Pool Cleaner has left mark on fibreglass pool.Has this happened to you, will it damage pool?

We recently installed a Pentair Water Poolshark Automatic Pool cleaner and it seems to have left a white line mark, that is rough to touch, on the bottom of all sides of the pool and especially the corners. Has anyone else had this experience and will it damage the pool. Thank you.

To be honest, neither is cheaper - it depends on what company you go to and what extras you want with your pool (eg: pool lights, fencing, landscaping, automatic cleaners, chlorinator etc...)

In the long run a fibreglass pool is easier to maintain. If heating the pool the fibreglass will retain the heat longer whereas a concrete pool will suck alot of the heat into the ground.

Fibreglass also use next to nothing with chemicals. You treat them maybe once a month depending on the season but with concrete you need to use alot more chemicals such as hardener and calcium remover etc. Fibreglass pools dont grow calcium as quick as a concrete. You will normally have calcium in a concrete pool within the first year and fibreglass is normally 7 years.

Another thing to note is installation times. Fibreglass will normally be installed within two weeks and concrete can take up to 6 months or more depending on the weather. So site costs can add up if the site is open longer.

Personally i prefer fibreglass. It is much nicer towards you swim wear and after 8 hours of continuous swimming it wont hurt your feet (Pebblecrete rips up your feet!)

Its personal preference really. The bad thing about fibreglass is that its pretty much what you see is what you get, in terms of sizes and shapes.

Last but not least, is water based acrylic pool paint. This paint can be used on any type of surface, is easy to apply, and cleans up with water. This type of pool paint is ideal for commercial applications that are repainted on a regular basis. It should last about 2 - 3 years.

Whatever paint you use, it is important to follow manufactureâs instructions, follow recommended safety guidelines and make sure you prepare the pool properly. Preparation is the most important step in pool painting. Without the proper preparation the paint will not bond with the wall or existing surface.

Pool owners: What should the D. E. filter pressure read after cleaning?

I got a new Pentair D. E. filter installed last year. Since it's been a year, I had Leslie's Pools come out and clean it. I did not check the pressure before they left. Now, about 3 hours later, it's running at a pressure of just 1-2. Normally it runs at 10-15. Is this normal for after a cleaning? Also, I read the owner's manual online, and it says to soak the elements for 4 hours. Leslie's obviously did not do this. Was I ripped off? Do I need to call them back and have them fix my pool or will it go back to normal after awhile? Thanks for reading and answering.

Every pool runs at different pressure. But 1-2 is excessively low. I too believe they did something wrong. If they failed to add DE make them clean the filter all over using automatic dish detergent. Oil will permeate the fabric and plug it up in minutes without DE to protect it. The detergent removes the oil. Of course, the gauge could be defective.

It depends on what kind of vaccuming you want. Automatic or manual. There are several choices for automatic pool sweepers. Some work off the suction side of your filter, and others use the return water for power.
For manual vacuuming, you will need a pole, vacuum hose, and vacuum attachment. There are two types of vacuum attachments, one is for vinyl lined pools(has brushes on it instead of wheels), one is for standard gunnite pools (has wheels on the bottom).
To vacuum manually: First turn on your filter. Attach the vacuum attachment to the pole, then one end of the hose to the attachment. Hold the hose and insert the vacuum head attachment into the water. Let it sink to the bottom, then keep feeding the hose into the water. This will fill the vacuum hose with water. When you get the entire hose filled with water, insert the end into the skimmer hole that sucks water into the filter. Make sure you get a vacuum hose that's long enough to reach all areas of the pool.
