mrh007

i need to buy an auotmatic pool cleaner. i've heard some bad things about the polaris and i'm thinking of going with the kreepy krauly instead. has anyone used these? which one will last longer and work better?

Answer
Two different animals. Kreepy is a suctiom side cleaner. Polaris is pressure side. Polaris makes a bunch of models. Choosing which one is best for you is a challenge in itself. (Polaris also makes a suction side unit, by the way.) Personally I much prefer Kreepy over Polaris. It is simpler. Has one moving part. Easier to repair. Average repair is much cheaper than Polaris. Frankly, when I had my pool store I finally quit selling Polaris products. I wasn't happy with the overall quality of the units. Every one I sold became more of a liability for the store. I'd opt for Kreepy if I were you.

what is the best automatic pool cleaner for a fiberglass pool?

bslevin8

I am wondering what is the best pool cleaner for a fiberglass pool, i have heard many different opinions from stores trying to sell their products, some say baracuda X7 is the best then another store said no way for a fiberglass pool, that i should use polaris. Anyone have any input? what are my options?

Answer
i own a pool company.and have seen many different auto pool cleaners.( 13 years) and by far a polaris would be your best bet.however you would be better off if you by one online as it is cheaper.look for SWIMMING POOL DEALERS. buying one online you cut out the middle man because of the price mark up they have.if you go to a pool store expect to pay a thousand 1000.00 dollars or more.buy it online most of the time it is cheaper

Are there companies that clean above ground pools?

s_contr20

I know there are automatic above ground pool cleaners, but I would like to know if there are those who clean them for you.

Answer
They are out. I'm an example of one of those companies that will clean an above ground pool as that is what we specialize in. Just check through the yellow pages and makes some calls. If they won't do the work ask them if they will recommend someone or know who will do the work. Pool service is kind of a tight niche in a lot of areas and one company will usually know a few others in the area and what they would specialize in or offer as service. Also places like craiglists can be a good place to find local services at low cost, but it's 50 50 to the type of quality service you will get.

I have an inground pool and hate to vacuum the pool. What is the best one out there?

Answer
The absolute best would be a booster pump powered Polaris, any model. If your budget doesn't allow spending 1800 bucks then my vote is for both the Kreepy Krauly and the Hayward Navigator. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and a lot will depend if this is a concrete or vinyl pool. Kreepy's have a tendency to plow through just about anything, but they also tend to get stuck on many pool shapes unless you purchase the optional back up device for them. The Navigators don't tend to get stuck, but they are also not as adept at climbing walls or powering through heavy debris.

Anyone know an easy way to get wrinkles from the bottom of a pool liner (above ground) after water is in?

best automatic pool cleaner for vinyl pools on ... 120-00 Pressure Side Automatic Pool Cleaner - Pump Pool Cleaner Sale
best automatic pool cleaner for vinyl pools image

Troy

Just put up a new above ground pool and the installers left some pretty big wrinkles in the bottom of the liner. Since there's already water in it, how can this be fixed without emptying it completely?

Answer
If it was an inch of water or so, you can push the wrinkles out towards the wall but if there's more water than that in there, sorry, ain't gonna happen. Normally during an installation , there's some one in the pool scouting out wrinkles as the pool fills and the liner vac is going (they did use a vacuum to suck the air out behind the liner to remove the wrinkles, right?). That way you can catch them and push them out before you get to the point where there's an inch of water.
Sometimes you'll see small wrinkles that are actually what we call packing creases. The liner has been in a box , folded for some time. It will get creases. Most are minor and will work themselves out if they are rounded at the top. If they are sharp ridged, they need help. Normally during the fill stage, with the liner vac going and only half an inch of water in the pool, you can get these stubborn packing creases out with a kettle of boiling water poured on the area. That usually works to make the vinyl pliable enough that the weight of the water will push out the wrinkle, if there's not much of a ridge.

Your choices here are two.
If they're minor, you may choose to live with them. They won't be going away though and if you use an automatic cleaner, the cleaner head may eventually wear through the ridge of the crease, causing a leak.
If they are large or have a sharp ridge, I'd be getting the installers back to drain and kick the wrinkles out very soon.

what is the correct vacuuming equipment for a 10,000 gallon pool?

generallee

Answer
It depends on what kind of vaccuming you want. Automatic or manual. There are several choices for automatic pool sweepers. Some work off the suction side of your filter, and others use the return water for power.
For manual vacuuming, you will need a pole, vacuum hose, and vacuum attachment. There are two types of vacuum attachments, one is for vinyl lined pools(has brushes on it instead of wheels), one is for standard gunnite pools (has wheels on the bottom).
To vacuum manually: First turn on your filter. Attach the vacuum attachment to the pole, then one end of the hose to the attachment. Hold the hose and insert the vacuum head attachment into the water. Let it sink to the bottom, then keep feeding the hose into the water. This will fill the vacuum hose with water. When you get the entire hose filled with water, insert the end into the skimmer hole that sucks water into the filter. Make sure you get a vacuum hose that's long enough to reach all areas of the pool.
For help selecting an automatic pool cleaner, see your local pool store. Hope this helps.

Asking price for a 27 foot above ground swimming pool?

automatic swimming pool cleaning equipment on Automatic Pool Cleaners, Vacuums, Sweeps for Swimming Pools - Pool ...
automatic swimming pool cleaning equipment image

Dain K

I have a 27 foot above ground swimming pool (3 years old) that I am trying to sell. It is in very good condition with a pump/filter, solar and winter covers, and accessories such stairs and automatic cleaner. The liner is fine now, but it may need to be replaced when torn down, but no idea. Is $1500 too much to ask? $1000? $500? I'm clueless on this.

Answer
Dain, i already answered your question on this with your other question when you referred to your pool as a 24 foot Round pool.

I gave it a second thought after posting, and seeing this message, IF you want to sell your pool, or get rid of it, you might want to post an ad for used pool equipment. A Pump/motor usually goes for 3-400 bucks, and the filter could be a few hundred more, but the equipment is used, so if you get someone to buy it for 500 dollars you should consider yourself lucky. Place an add for the equipment, and as a bonus they can have the pool for free. you might get a taker, But refer to my other message where i talked about liability. You don't want to be held responsible when the pool leaves your yard, so should something happen in 2 weeks, whether it is faultyequipment or improper installation, just make sure you dont get caught up in it.

It makes no sense to try and make a few bucks back on your pool that is 3 years old, and then by some string of bad luck, have someone come knocking on your door looking for damages because the ladder or steps failed and someone got injured. Sure it could be from the new owner installing equipment improperly, and you have no control over it, But is it really worth the hassle? Sell your used equipment, people will buy it. Especially now where people are going to have equipment failures and problems from the past winter, and dismantle your pool and put it on the side of the road, i guarantee someone will load it and take it away, even if there is no equipment.

What Chemicals Should I Use To Remove Green Algae From My Swimming Pool?

kenne727

My pool has been looking very green lately. I have noticed that the bottom (the floor) and the walls of the pool are frequently greenish and needs to be vacuumed very often. But I want to know why this is the case. Is this because of algae growing? What chemicals should I buy. I know that shock and phosfree is needed. What effect will these chemicals have on the algae and water, and what do these chemicals do?

Thank you

Answer
Every pool owner has, at one time or another, done battle with the occasional algae bloom. Algae spores constantly enter the pool, brought in by wind, rain or even contaminated swimsuits or equipment.
Algae are a living aquatic creature that multiplies rapidly on warm, sunny days. Containing chlorophyll, algae utilizes photosynthesis to grow. That is, they take in carbon dioxide and expend oxygen as a byproduct. There are over 21,000 known varieties of algae and they classified into colors âgreen, yellow, black, pink.
Proper chemical balance and sanitizer residuals will prevent many opportunities for algae to bloom. High pH and low chlorine (or other sanitizer) can give algae a great start to genesis. General cleanliness of the pool is also important. Organic material and bacteria can contribute to algae growth.
Regular brushing of seemingly clean pools is not only good exercise for you, but prevents dirt from harboring in the pores of the plaster, which is a good start for an algae colony. Add unstabilized clorine granules (shock) to the pool. the amount of chlorine you add will depend on the capacity of your pool (150gr/10,000L or approx. 5oz of chlorine/2500gal of water). Vacuum the white residue from the bottom of the pool the next day. Clean your filter to remove any alga residue. Rebalance your pool water.
The cause of reoccurring algae, especially if it keeps appearing in the same places, is poor circulation. Often we find the return(s) of the pool (where water reenters the pool from the filter system) directed towards the surface of the pool. Dead spots are areas where little or no water is circulating. Even with main drains, the returns pointed upward to the surface mean little or no circulation on the bottom or lower areas of the walls. This results in little or no algaecide reaching these spots and algae never really being eradicated.
The there are ways to increase the area of circulation is to run your automatic cleaner. Even when the pool is not dirty, it helps to bring clean, just running your cleaner once a week can make a big difference in preventing algae from reoccurring. The best

My self cleaning pool's jet's are malfunctioning...HELP!?

automatic pool cleaners inground image

RogerE

My inground pool has a timed automatic self cleaning system that has jets built into the bottom at various points that come on and push water all around the pool and, I guess, eventually going through the filter at the bottom and the skimmer at the top. When my pool pump kicks on, only one set (2) jets at one end come on and they stay on the entire cycle of 4 hours and the other jets don't rotate like they have been since I bought the house last year. Anyone know how I can check the problem? or where the malfunction may be occurring? Thanks!...Roger

Answer
beside the pool you should have like a canister that will have a band clamp around the belly. take that apart and inspect the gears...well first make sure the canister is not on pause.......if it is just switch it back to activate. Also those heads in the bottom of the pool do come out. you might need a specific tool to remove them but they pop out and could be full of calcium and all the heads just need to be cleaned....thats about all the info i can give you....maybe someone else has had more experience with in-floor cleaners.

Answer
when you say Cleaner do you mean sanitizer for your water, such as Chlorine, Bromine, or Softswim/Baquacil (essentially the same product) Or do you mean Automatic cleaner for your pool for leaves and sand etc etc?

You need to be a little more specific......

Either way... Any of the above chemicals is proven and tested to be effective in cleaning your water and keeping it safe, in coordination with your pool pump and filter naturally..

As for a automatic cleaner.... there are many of them on the market, some are really busts, while some are effective, and actually do a good job. If you have an inground pool, i would say without a doubt that the best cleaner would be the Polaris automatic pool cleaner. IT only takes 1-2 hours a day to effectively clean your pool, and keep it clear of everything. There were many pools i would never have to vac out when i serviced them because of this cleaner.

As for an above ground pool, you are pretty much limited to different types of cleaners that are usually electric in nature, and are just thrown into the pool and when you plug them in, they go around and around and clean the pool...

If you are asking for a cleaner in regards to tile, Most of the major chemical suppliers for swimming pools make chemical cleaners for the tile, and the pool in general that will not harm the water or the balance of the water.

Again... without your question being more specific, i dont know if there is anything else i can help you with.

automatic pool cleaners above ground image

Heather D

The brownish powder settles onto the pool floor. It is an above ground pool. You can brush your foot over it and it mixes into the water and then settles again. We have tried vacuuming it, but it reappears and we end up having to vacuum practically every day. It is not effecting the clarity of the pool, but the pool begins to look dirty because of this on the bottom. It is also worse on the side that does not get the direct sun all day.

Answer
That's what comes with having pools, that's the stuff that settles, like dirt, pollen, leave particles, just all the iky stuff that collects. Other than buying one of those automatic cleaners that continously skim the bottom, the daily or for some the weekly pool vacuum cleans it.

how do above ground automatic pool cleaners work??

Hugeez

Answer
the most common form of pool cleaners are suction cleaners which have a hose that simply attaches through the skimmer. (If the pool has a main drain, it would need to be closed using the valve). The cleaner automatically moves around the bottom of the pool, sucking debris off the bottom of the pool and trapping it in the pump basket and filter. The pump basket should be emptied before and after the cleaning cycle. And the filter should be cleaned after cleaning the pool. Any large debris (leaves, sticks, and such) should be removed from the pool with a leaf rake before hooking up cleaner to prevent clogging up plumbing and allowing for a more effecient cleaning cycle. If you are considering purchasing a cleaner, I highly recommend the Zodiac brand. ( By the way, incase you're wondering, I own a swimming pool company and would be more than happy to answer any other questions you may have)

what do u guys and gals think the best above ground AUTOMATIC pool cleaner is the best. i have a baracuda zippy now it did ok for a while now its just dead. please give me some SERIOUS answers. i know my kids can do it. im looking for some advice. thanks you in advance.

Answer
I do realize you said serious advice ... but I can't help myself. Actually I have a "spider" cleaner that I sometimes have used in my above ground pool - BUT ... in all seriousness - I now have a "pool boy" ... not the speedo kind - but a gentleman that comes weekly from my pool chemical supply place for a cost of only $35 weekly + chemicals. Money well spent! Just wanted to let you know to check into it because it is probably more affordable than you realize. The fellow brings chemicals and adds them as needed and that cost then is added to my charge ticket.

It is nice to not have to worry about time consuming (although relaxing) cleaning. It never gets out of hand due to weather or heat etc. All we have to do is come in from work & enjoy the water.

Good luck.

How do I rid of the dirt at the bottom of my pool if all the automatic vacuum does is mix it?

automatic pool cleaner sand on Automatic Pool Cleaners
automatic pool cleaner sand image

coldmv

I am unsure if it's dirt, old DE, or algae. I am attempting to push all of it down the drain, but this also just mixes in with the water making clouds. Any advice?

Answer
First off i would use a regular pool vac and put your filter on waste and just get rid of it once and for all by slowly sucking it up (take your time as clouds happen when you go to fast). If your still using an old DE filter then personally id give it the old heave ho and get a sand filter as they are not that expensive and are much safer and easier to maintain then the DE filters especially since the dust they use to re coat them is considered a carcinogen.

If your making clouds chances are it isnt algae as it usually acts like super glue to the walls of your pool until you super chlorinate it into oblivion. Might be dirt but if it doesnt come up with the manual vacuuming i highly doubt it. If you do have a DE filter it might be junk that made it from the DE filter into the pool and thus always makes it way back in. If its a cartridge filter it could be your filter is clogged up and is thus missing material and just reshooting it out into the pool. Simply hose down a cartridge filter until clean with a pressure washer and reinstall.

Short Form Answer
1.) If you have a DE toss it and get a sand filter, much easier to maintain and safer to use
2.) If your not sure what it is in the bottom check your chlorine levels if they are non existent or low super chlorinate and see what happens to it then (whether it vacs up or not)
3.) Use a manual vac for cleanups and the auto vac for basic weekly maintenance when your not using the pool.

I have a below ground pool and am trying to find reviews on automatic pool cleaners. Consumer Reports doesn't seem to have anything on the subject :( Can anyone lend some insight and perspective on automatic pool cleaners and make a recommendation? Much thanks in advance.

Answer
Suction-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

In researching suction-side cleaners, weâve found that the Stanley PoolTec DLX In-Ground Automatic Pool Vacuum Cleaner is the newest and most innovative way to keep your pool clean. The trusted brand of Stanley, with its master craftsmanship and innovative design provides a cleaner that is easy to install and operate and provides continuous cleaning of most in-ground pools. Operating with your poolâs filter, this suction cleaning mechanism maintains a proper angle for optimal performance while cleaning pools with depths of 9 ft.

Pressure-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

If you are looking for a pressure-side cleaner and you want your pool cleaned quickly and completely, we recommend the Kreepy Krauly Legend cleaner from Pentair. A host of design features combine to keep the Legend cleaner on the move, thoroughly cleaning most pools in just 1 to 3 hours. The debris channel and large intake throat handles leaves, twigs and other large debris with ease. The Front-wheel drive generates maximum traction on inclined surfaces for total coverage of pool bottom and walls. The independent booster pump helps provide optimum cleaning power and unimpeded surface skimming. Another great feature is that disposable cleaner bags are also availableâno need to empty or touch debris again.

Robotic / Electronic Automatic Pool Cleaners

Many consumers are now selecting incredibly efficient robotic units as their cleaners of choice. These are great at cleaning small debris and sand as well as one of the only types that clean and scrub the walls and tile line. The Dolphin Supreme M3 and M4 from Maytronics are great options for robotic cleaners. These award-winning models have features that are designed for customers and are backed by the Maytronics name which has provided 25 years of technological leadership. Not only are Dolphin M3 and M4 energy efficient (average cost of less than $0.15 to clean the pool), but they have weekly timers where a user can preset cleanings throughout the week.

Here are some more links to more information. I hope this helps.

Answer
The first thing you should do is shock your pool (you can buy chlorine shock at the store, it's basically just a high dosage of chlorine to kill bacteria and clean the water). Next, you should add stabilizer. Stabilizer will give your chlorine something to bond to so it doesn't evaporate so quickly.

This will take a few days to dissolve. Do you have floating chemical dispenser or an automatic chlorinator? Either way, fill it with chlorine pucks or tablets (they work the same way, they're just different sizes depending on how big your dispenser is).

Then you need to keep testing your water. If your chlorine levels get too high, then add less pucks or turn down the dispenser/chlorinator. If the chlorine gets too low, add more pucks or turn the unit up. If your pH gets too high or too low, you need to add some pH decreaser or pH increaser. If your alkalinity gets too low, add total alkalinity increaser. If your alkalinity gets a little high, use pH decreaser - if it gets extremely high, use muriatic acid.

It's hard for us to tell you how many chemicals you need. Everyone needs a different amount, depending on their water chemistry, amount of water their pool holds, how well they care for their pool, etc. Your basics are shock (do once a week and wait 24 hours before swimming), stabilizer, and chlorine pucks or tablets. You should also buy some test strips to test your water quickly at home, to see how your chlorine/pH/alkalinity levels are doing. Then you should buy and add more chemicals according to what your readings are telling you.

If this gets too confusing, you can always bring a sample of your water in an old water bottle to your local pool store. Most do free water testing, and they can tell you exactly which chemicals and how much of those chemicals you should add.

what is the single greatest use for salt?

Haley

Answer
there are actually many great uses of salt which benefits us in many ways like:

ALUMINIUM PURIFICATION Salt is used as a flux. The salt sits on top of the molten aluminium in molten salt form, this removes iron and other metals from aluminium leaving pure metal.

BREAD AND PASTRY Salt is used to give added flavour to bread and pastry. The main requirement here is that the product, either flossy or superfine, is clean and free from any extraneous matter. Salt also performs a function in controlling the rate at which the yeast works in the dough, giving a better texture to the bread.

CANNING OF MEAT AND VEGETABLES Salt is added to the products during processing and it is essential in these cases that the salt be free of grit, and particularly free of any specks or iron particles as these show up in the finished product.

CAUSTIC/CHLORINE MANUFACTURE The conversion of salt to form caustic soda and chlorine requires a crude salt with very high chemical purity. Salt is dissolved to form brine and the impurities are removed chemically before the brine passes into the electrolytic cells.

CHEESE MANUFACTURE Most cheese today is made on automatic machines and salting must be carried out in a continuous process. The salt used must be extremely dry at all times and contain virtually no fines beyond 60 mesh.

DRILLING Salt is used to mix with boring mud which is pumped down bore holes to form a wall when drilling through gravel or sandy material which will not stand up on its own.

FISH & MEAT CURING This is usually carried out by dissolving salt to form a strong brine to act as a pickle. The products may be placed in the pickle, or in many cases the pickle is pumped into the actual meat (such as in the case of bacon and ham). Salt for these purposes should be refined grades, clean and of high quality.

GENERAL COOKING Fine salt is used for all sorts of cooking and is similar to table salt, without the addition of Sodium Silico Aluminate.

HIDE CURING Hides and sheep skins are normally salted with a reasonably low quality salt. Hide salts are usually only washed grades but contain certain additives such as boric acid, to keep the hide as light a colour as possible. Other additives are naphthalene and sodium fluoride.

POTTERY PRODUCTION Salt is used to form the very smooth glaze on clay tiles or pottery ware. After a kiln of tiles reaches a yellow to white heat, salt is then fed on to the fire. The salt vaporises and passes on to the surface of the tile, actually forming a glass surface.

SOAP & GLYCERINE MANUFACTURE Fats and oils are saponified by heating with caustic soda to produce soap and glycerine. The soap is "grained" or "salted out" from solution by adding salt or strong brine.

SWIMMING POOLS Swimming pool salt is designed specifically for use with salt pool chlorinators

SYNTHETIC RUBBER MANUFACTURE Synthetic rubber is produced in the form of white latex to which salt is added as an emulsifier. Salt for this purpose is in crude form, of medium quality.

TABLE SALT This is a specially prepared salt for domestic purposes, with small, even crystals. Sodium Silico Aluminate is added as a free flowing agent. Table salt also comes in iodised form.

TEXTILE DYEING Salt is added to the dye baths during the process mainly to make the dyes fast. Flossy salt is the grade most commonly used in this process.

WATER SOFTENING Salt is used in both industrial and home water softening units. The purpose being to regenerate the resins which pick up the objectionable salts in the normal water supply. Salt for this purpose is usually a washed or refined grade. A similar type of salt is used for making a brine for brine cooling systems.

OTHER USES Other uses of salt include butter manufacture, soil stabilisation, tempering of steel, fertilisers and weed killers, and pine board manufacture.
