Just drained in ground spa.?

I was able to find out how to drain the water from an in-ground spa. I have filled the spa back up, and when I turn the pump on to provide the jets and the automatic feed of the chemicals, all that happens is the water is drained back out of the pool. I have turned all valves back to the original position they were at before I drained the pool, but there is no water flow into the pool now.

I am using a WhisperFlo WFE-4 pump. There sounds to be some air in the pump lines, but I can not find the air-release valve to allow for this air to be pushed out.

Any help you can give me is appreciated.
The pump is a self priming pump.
I tried adding water to the line with a garden hose, it just drains right out. I have an automatic bromine feeder, and when I tried to add water through that, it just drains out as well. I am stumped on this one.

It sounds as though you drained it so far the lines are totally full of air. If there's a resevoir with a sight glass on the pump you need to remove the cover (take this opportunity to clean the basket) and fill the pump and lines from a garden hose, etc. Carefully replace the o-ring gasket and replace the cover, making sure it's tight. Now try to restart the pump and see if it'll suck enough water to maintain it's prime and start recirculating.

How expensive is it to maintain an in-ground pool?

Q. We are VERY interested in a house and are seriously considering making an offer. The only thing holding me back is that the house has an inground pool. Personally, I hate inground pools. They seem like so much work, maintenance and are such a huge liability. We have small children and I just don't feel safe about it at all. Because of this, we will offer much less than what they are asking.

The sellers insist that its not that bad though. I beg to differ. Constant cleaning, all the pumps and motors and such, the items we'd have to buy to childproof it (there are none installed currently), all the chemicals and let's not forget the increase in home insurance due to the liability of the pool. So, my question to pool owners is, how much does it REALLY cost to maintain the pool?

We bought a house with an in-ground pool about 10 years ago. We also have two small children and were in the same dilema. It has been worth it. The yearly maintenance is relatively easy. If you take care of the pool, bring the filter/pump in to the house in the off season (if you live in areas that you wouldn't use it year round). We use the pool May-Oct. We have large oak trees, but the daily and weekly care is not bad. I vacuum once a week, I have an automatic chlorinator (not expensive), and the return jets are set up so that the pool skims itself. The monthly cost for chemicals is not bad, after the initial "opening" of the pool (apprx $100-150) I spend about $20 a month. The learning curve goes quickly, just find a good pool person to advise you. I spend less than 15 minutes every other day checking it, doing a quick skim or adding chlorine.
We also had big concerns with pool safety. We did two things to help. One was to teach the kids how to get to the side of the pool and hold on if they fell in, we taught them how to swim early and we put locks on the doors to the outside with an audible alarm. The pool alarm that goes in the water does not work well, not worth the money.

If you really want the house but don't want the pool you can get a safety cover, drain the pool and not use it. The cost of filling in the hole and making a lawn is relative to running it for a few years. I had a friend that had his filled.

But, the kids have used it for years, they love it, spend a lot of time in it, and learned to swim very well and to respect the water....good luck!

Skimmer/drain valve to all skimmer and then all suction to only one skimmer. This provides the maximum possible suction for the pool vac. If that turns out to be so much suction that it is hard to push the vac across the pool floor, then adjust the valve to allow a little suction at the other skimmer.

There isn't really a standard design for in ground pools - they have different configurations of drains, skimmers, pumps, filters. You find what works for yours and go with that.

What costs are involved in maintaining a pool?

Q. We are looking at buying a home with a large, above-ground pool. The house is on well/septic, so we would have to have water delivered. We've never owned a pool before and have no idea what the costs are to deliver water to fill the pool or for weekly/biweekly/monthly maintenance for a pool... and aren't sure if we pay someone to drain the pool for autumn and winter. Any ballpark estimates on costs (and/or links to helpful URLS) would be great, so that we can add these costs to the budget of buying this house and therefore seeing if we have to forget this house and look for another. ok. first, if u do not want to use the pool, it does not mean u cannot buy the house. u can let it sit there or turn it into a sand box or fort or give it away or even sell it.

two>shipping in water. it is my understanding that it can be VERY expensive. in santacruz CAlifornia my grandma says it costs her almost $300 usD for one truck tank. and it would last 3 days or so under normal use.

three>why couldn't you use the well water for the pool. aren't u going to bathe in it? also, if u are going to drink that water you need it tested. but definitely do look for a house that has it's own drinkable water.

next to last>safety. the pool is like a burning pit waiting to drown someone. not really but could be. and if it isn't one of yours it could be someone elses and that is sad too but also means you get sued. it needs a cover.

last>pool care.

a cover will help keep it clean and warm. but thing is, it can get so warm that you may want to leave the cover off in the summer so then you would need a fence.

the other way it gets cleaned is u scoop out debris but if u have a good filter u will not need to. A skimmer will be built in probably; that means debris floats in but can't float out. then also there may be a bottom crawler you can get; like an automatic full time vacum that crawls back and forth.

The only other maintenance it really needs is putting in chlorine. but also i think u do a pH check. My mom used to make me do it all for our pool and i had to test with a little vial and if the colors were here or there determined if i had to pour in the hydrochloric acid.

so that is two things i think. the pH and the chlorine. the chlorine i think they are a lot of the times using big pellets that time release. and then if the level drops big like after a pool party you might need to pour in a little extra.

draining the pool is done if you do not want to use it. like no heater cost. a clear or semi-opaque cover can heat it considerably but not enough in the coldest parts of winter plus in very cold areas you are looking at freeze and expansion; so draining water things is standard a lot of the time. garden hoses and lots of things can freeze with water inside and sometimes even break the thing that contains the water because of the expansion. this can be a danger during prolonged power outtages and your water pipes freeze under your house or such.

as far as how you drain it. if there is no plug, then siphon it with a garden hose. If you do not wish the chlorine to go onto vegetation, then let the level in the pool drop before draining it. it drops because chlorine evaporates to the atmosphere.

i am not sure what extent the parts are interchangable. but they might be. so if they were it would pay to shop around if you ever had to replace the vinyl liner or such.

local pool supply is interested in helping you to know these things because they want you to buy from them. so query them as to chlorine tablet size and such. bring with you pool dimensions or other info.

Is high school diving safe??? How can I keep from hitting the bottom?

Hi, I am 16 years old, and I just went to my first High School diving practice tonight. I am a little worried about the safety of it though, because when doing a pike save (rolling inward under water so as to not hurt your back), I sometimes stop moving like 2.5-3ft from the bottom of the pool, and I can't stop wondering, what if I pike too late? Will i hit my head/ back and become paralyzed or injured?

What do you think about this and the safety of diving, especially for someone just starting that has no history of gymnastics or anything?

The purpose of the pike save is not to protect the back, it's to 'save' (i.e. clean up) a poor (non-vertical) entry, so you don't get marked down so much by the judges. It helps to minimise the amount of splash you produce, and also reduces the 'sting' from slight over-rotation. A side effect is that you don't go as deep as you would if you held the vertical entry position. If that's the first thing they're teaching you, I would suggest either that your school diving pit is too shallow (unlikely, since these things are subject to federal/ international standards), or that your school is terrified of lawsuits of any description (very likely, given that you're--presumably--in the US).

I have dived in multiple pools in the UK, and the minimum depth under a 3 m springboard was always ~3.5 m (11 ft) or more. This was more than sufficient that, even on a clean vertical entry, though I might touch bottom, I would never hit it hard enough to hurt. Anyway, you hit the water with your hands locked above your head, thus it's your hands which would strike the bottom first, and you can then cushion the impact with your arms. The risk of paralysis is minimal, so don't worry about it. Even if you leave the roll a little late, as soon as you start to roll, you will instantly slow/ stop your descent. Just keep your hands overhead until after you start the roll.

Diving's a relatively safe sport, though, certainly compared to e.g. football. The most common injury is the sting from a bad entry, which admittedly hurts like a b***h for a couple of minutes, but does little if any lasting damage--except to your confidence, if you let it. The worst thing is probably hitting the board during the flight, but that only happens if you get the takeoff completely wrong, and THEN try to perform your dive anyway. Better to just abort the movement, and try again (although doing so in competition will earn you an automatic 'failed dive').

To be honest, neither is cheaper - it depends on what company you go to and what extras you want with your pool (eg: pool lights, fencing, landscaping, automatic cleaners, chlorinator etc...)

In the long run a fibreglass pool is easier to maintain. If heating the pool the fibreglass will retain the heat longer whereas a concrete pool will suck alot of the heat into the ground.

Fibreglass also use next to nothing with chemicals. You treat them maybe once a month depending on the season but with concrete you need to use alot more chemicals such as hardener and calcium remover etc. Fibreglass pools dont grow calcium as quick as a concrete. You will normally have calcium in a concrete pool within the first year and fibreglass is normally 7 years.

Another thing to note is installation times. Fibreglass will normally be installed within two weeks and concrete can take up to 6 months or more depending on the weather. So site costs can add up if the site is open longer.

Personally i prefer fibreglass. It is much nicer towards you swim wear and after 8 hours of continuous swimming it wont hurt your feet (Pebblecrete rips up your feet!)

Its personal preference really. The bad thing about fibreglass is that its pretty much what you see is what you get, in terms of sizes and shapes.

Orb pool chemical system - how does it work?

The sales person was telling me that it releases copper into the water & keeps the pool cleaner than just adding regular chlorine. We already have metals in our water (city water) & I am concerned about the liner turning orange. The guy said if you have a gunite pool it will turn it blue. What are ingredients of the chemical used in the orb. Does the Orb release copper or does it just hold the chemical &the chemical releases copper? Is the Orb system on cleaning your pool, better than just adding regular chlorine to a floaty thing? Are there any complaints about the Orb system?
What product do you suggest to use, so as not to fade or color the liner?

I am not familiar with the Orb pool chemical system in particular but, If you know your source water has metals in it stay away form any chemicals that contain copper. You will eventually have staining of the pool liner and discolored water. Copper usually shows up as a blue/green stain. It is recommended not to use a floater in a vinyl liner pool. There is a chance that it could sink and bleach the liner. It is a small chance admittedly, but a chance not worth taking and needing to replace your liner. I highly suggest installing an automatic chlorinator like one of these http://www.everything4pools.com/products/42/default.html .
and use regular chlorine tablets in the chlorinator. This is safe for your liner, will reduce the frequency to refill the chlorinator and can be adjusted to maintain a steady level of chlorine by turning a control knob on the chlorinator. Have your pool water tested for metals, you may need to add a stain preventative to help remove the copper already in the fill water. Be diligent in keeping you water chemistry in the proper ranges and you will have no adverse effects from the copper in your fill water.

Asking price for a 27 foot above ground swimming pool?

I have a 27 foot above ground swimming pool (3 years old) that I am trying to sell. It is in very good condition with a pump/filter, solar and winter covers, and accessories such stairs and automatic cleaner. The liner is fine now, but it may need to be replaced when torn down, but no idea. Is $1500 too much to ask? $1000? $500? I'm clueless on this.

Dain, i already answered your question on this with your other question when you referred to your pool as a 24 foot Round pool.

I gave it a second thought after posting, and seeing this message, IF you want to sell your pool, or get rid of it, you might want to post an ad for used pool equipment. A Pump/motor usually goes for 3-400 bucks, and the filter could be a few hundred more, but the equipment is used, so if you get someone to buy it for 500 dollars you should consider yourself lucky. Place an add for the equipment, and as a bonus they can have the pool for free. you might get a taker, But refer to my other message where i talked about liability. You don't want to be held responsible when the pool leaves your yard, so should something happen in 2 weeks, whether it is faultyequipment or improper installation, just make sure you dont get caught up in it.

It makes no sense to try and make a few bucks back on your pool that is 3 years old, and then by some string of bad luck, have someone come knocking on your door looking for damages because the ladder or steps failed and someone got injured. Sure it could be from the new owner installing equipment improperly, and you have no control over it, But is it really worth the hassle? Sell your used equipment, people will buy it. Especially now where people are going to have equipment failures and problems from the past winter, and dismantle your pool and put it on the side of the road, i guarantee someone will load it and take it away, even if there is no equipment.

Depends on wether you get mostly leaves or dirt.
If you get lots of leaves,a pressure side cleaner like polaris or hayward viper is best
If you get mostly dirt,then I would say a suction cleaner like a kreepy krauly or hayward navigator

What can i do about an above ground pool that has yellow water?

My younger sister got an above ground intex pool for her 7th birthday. It's been set up for a month now, and the water is starting to turn yellow. We bought a PH testing kit which also gives results for free chlorine, total alkalinity and stabilizer. The PH level results were 7.8, which is supposed to be pretty normal. There was absolutely no free chlorine, and the total alkalinity too high (200). The stabilizer was also far too low.
I really don't know what to do about it. We live in a city of 40,000 but there are no places here that give advice for pool care (probably because it doesn't get overly warm here in summer)
The paper that came with the testing kit suggested that we put sodium bisulfate into the pool to lower the alkalinity, but i have no idea what that is.
Does anyone know what to do about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Your PH of 7.8 sounds to be a little on the high side. I think the nominal is supposed to be around 7.2. As far as maintenance, what kind of filtration system do you have? This can make a huge difference in how clean your pool water stays. I've never used sodium bi-sulfate and couldn't even tell you what this is product does. Maybe a google search will reveal more about how it works, how to use it, and where to purchase it if you want to go that route. In my pool I've never had to add anything but chlorine, stabilizer, and occasionally a touch of algaecide. You might want to consider using an automatic chlorinator with chlorine tablets which will administer chlorine to the pool regularly. I also use granulated stabilizer administered through a nylon stocking tied off on the side of the pool to help extend the life of your chlorine in the water. This works for me, but from what you describe, I imagine your must live in a climate far different than mine. Where I live, it is now almost full-blown winter time, and outdoor swimming is an impossibility. It also gets plenty hot in the summer, with temperatures occasionally climbing up to 100, so there is always a lot of interest in swimming pools. It's referring to the type of pool you have. Above-ground cleaners mainly cover the bottom of the pool. Since the sides in most inground pools have either curves or slopes between the floor and the walls, (above-ground pools usually have right angles) the cleaners are generally able to climb the walls and clean them as well. (And, generally there will be a big price difference between the two types; in-ground cleaners generally cost a lot more.

Inground. I guess I know the pros. Wanting to know if the pros outweigh the cons. I have a 5 & 10 yr old. Is maintaining it overly costly or time consuming. I would be the pool guy.

Get the pool, but only if you are willing to "feed it" just as you would a pet. DAILY-- even when you can't use it because it's too cold. You must commit to cleaning (made easier by automatic cleaners), checking and adjusting chemicals, emptying bags and baskets, adding water to it. Higher utility bills are a given. Pools don't cost much in repairs UNTIL the warranties expire. Then get ready!
And, most importantly, do NOT buy price! Quality costs money. Remember, this fixture is attached to your property and can add to-- or take away from-- your property value. It will not add as much value as it's cost, however.
Consider a pool as you would a room addition. An outdoor room!

We are renting a house with an in ground pool. It has a Polaris 340 automatic pool cleaner. I have searched everywhere on the net for an owners manual and can't seem to find one. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Or tell me how to use it?

It's referring to the type of pool you have. Above-ground cleaners mainly cover the bottom of the pool. Since the sides in most inground pools have either curves or slopes between the floor and the walls, (above-ground pools usually have right angles) the cleaners are generally able to climb the walls and clean them as well. (And, generally there will be a big price difference between the two types; in-ground cleaners generally cost a lot more.

Should I get the Kreepy Krauly Classic or Kruiser model? The classic seems more popular although the kruiser supposedly works better. There's good and bad reviews for both and I just can't decide.

I have an irregular shaped fiberglass coated in-ground pool. My current one just died and it never could get in the corners or the stairs. Any info you can provide is appreciated. Thanks.

Both Kreepy Krauly models are very good automatic pool cleaners. I think that the classic is a better option, but either will work great.

only a frame of the pool with a desk half way around it. the Inspector came inand told us eather to take it out or fill it with water. I need help desiding what would be easier and cheaper. to take the pool out and redo the deck or buy all the needed thing for runing a pool. Also I have no clue on taking care of the pool cleanig, the chemicals and all that.

i'm kinda lost bout your question but i do know how to clean a pool!
depending on it's size, when you first open it you wanta add a bit of chlorine...it's also good to get one of those little things that float around in the water, and that hold chlorine tablets.
after a little while your water may become foggy, so it would be good to add pool shock... uhmm... lets see what else...

a solar cover would a good investment too, it basically heats your water...
if it's kind of a big sized pool.. you might want a pool cleaner...

another really good thing to have is a pool water testing kit
it will test the ph level and chlorine level, they'll run you about $10

i know this stuff seems kind of expensive, but the only stuff you'll ever have to buy repeditively are pool chemicals

I chcked out the links in the answers above me and found a stange site that said nothing but had lots of google ads.The first thing you must decide is what TYPE of cleaner you want:

1)a pressure type cleaner (runs off of water pressure,usually its own pump,attached to your pool return plumbing)

2)a suction type cleaner that is attached to your skimmer or suction plumbing

3)a self powered cleaner that you plug in or recharge and throw in pool.

when you have decided what type you want,then a decision can be made as to which is the best...pressure types are good for leaves...suction types are cheaper and good on dirt,self powered units are more expensive...I have a website I just put up this january..in a few weeks,I will have photos and information there regarding pool cleaners: http://swimming-pool-information.com
