what is the best vinyl variable depth automatic pool cleaner?

Robin D

any suggestions? need an automatic cleaner that won't get hung up in the deep end or around the walk edge

Answer
iRobot makes the best pool cleaner but I have to tell you, they sure are proud of it. You'll know what I mean when you look at the price. What is so nice about it is that it will clean the steps, walls all the way to the top, and it's fast. They have two different models depending on the type of pool you have. You can google it (irobot) for locations to purchase.

Aqua EZ pool cleaner automatic or similar?

Jenn E

Anyone have this type of pool cleaner or this particular one that you can buy from Lowes does it work good? We really need one for our pool. How does it work? thanks

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=209556-1003-APC389&lpage=none

Answer
I bought that one a few years ago when my polaris went on the fritz. Don't waste your money on it. It is terrible. I found a place for parts on the internet and fixed my polaris. If you want something similar that works pretty well then look up automatic pool cleaners and look at Kreepy Krawly. That one works pretty well. I probably did not spell it right. Good luck.

Can an automatic pool cleaner (a polaris) cause a leak?

NDallasPun

I have an inground fiberglass pool and have been loosing about an inch of water a day. I read other answers and tried the bucket test and also marked the side of the pool with electrical tape to track.
I have noticed that my polaris has been shooting quite a bit of water out of the pool via splashing or getting stuck but the problem only began about a week and a half ago and I have had a polaris for years.
I completely shut the polaris off one morning before work just to test that theory. When I came home at the end of the day, the water level was fine! Then I turned the polaris on and after about an hour of running, the level dropped about a quarter of an inch.
I know water always flows through the polaris piping but could the surge in pressure after turning the polaris motor cause a minor crack to begin leaking?

Side note: my main drain line at the bottom of the pool has either clogged or collapsed but that has been the case for about a year and the pool has always looked crystal clear and maintained good water levels.
Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Answer
If the pool only leaks when the polaris pump is running it, it is almost certainly a break in the pipe between the booster pump and the pool. When the pump is running there is a lot mor pressure in the pipe so it will leak a lot quicker.
A leak detection company should be able to pin point where the leak is, and then a pool company can dig it up and fix it.

Look for wet soil in garden beds, etc. with the pump running.
Palm trees are the biggest culprit in breaking pool pipes.

What is the best automatic pool cleaner (sweeper)?

Terry N

I have an inground pool and hate to vacuum the pool. What is the best one out there?

Answer
The absolute best would be a booster pump powered Polaris, any model. If your budget doesn't allow spending 1800 bucks then my vote is for both the Kreepy Krauly and the Hayward Navigator. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and a lot will depend if this is a concrete or vinyl pool. Kreepy's have a tendency to plow through just about anything, but they also tend to get stuck on many pool shapes unless you purchase the optional back up device for them. The Navigators don't tend to get stuck, but they are also not as adept at climbing walls or powering through heavy debris.

Answer

What Herb or Vitamin for Energy Is Best. I have pulmonary fibrosis?

barry l

Have had pulmonary fibrosis since 1999. My O2 blood oxygen level has been running 92% at the Doctor's office. I tell the Doctor it's not fair to take it when I have been resting in his office. I just want to sit here and watch TV or play poker on the computer,, no energy at all. My family depends on me to get stuff done. My wifes knees are shot. We are both 57. We have an inground pool that is getting harder and harder for me to open, close and keep up with. My family only knows I'm out of breath when I come in from working outside, they don't know how bad it is, except my daughter pulled me out of the trash can I passed out and fell in. Along with taking care of the yard, trimming my trees, normal home owner stuff, I'm shot if I exert myself. Sometimes the entire next day. I cant afford to have a pool boy and a lawn service.

Would oxygen give me more energy? My Doctor said he doesn't want to get me started on oxygen yet because I will become dependent on it. I'm sure it gets lower than the 92%, resting at the Doctors Office. I don't even have energy to get any exercise. When I bend over I get light headed, if I walk, I run out of gas. The thing is last year I was doing some walking and felt a little better, it has been a long winter here. I have gotten no exercise since last year, except running the snow blower. If I start coughing hard I pass out and wake up not knowing where I am for a few seconds. I have learned how to live with that, just don't cough, no matter how bad I need to. Ride it out and cough gently,, that works. They gave me prednisone, some ungodly amount 4 times a day, that I threw away 10 years ago... I started taking Oils after dinner every day,,, 2, 1000 flax oil gel caps, a 1000 Vitamin E gel cap, a fish oil 1000, an aloe vera (the biggest GNC has) and a Caltrate or OsCal. Sometimes, not always, I use an albuterol inhaler when I feel short of breath.

For example, my Grandson called this morning wanting to go swimming on no notice. We live in Michigan and have a short swimming season. I just got it opened a week ago but it's dirty again already. It's hard because it's surrounded with pine trees. The needles are always on the carpeted pool deck and I have to wash it off with the hose and the pool needs to be vacuumed again. Take the solar cover off full of water and put it back on... I had to tell my grandson no, now I feel bad. I don't have an automatic pool vac, I have to do it the old fashioned way, with a pole. Once I get started it's not that bad. I made some extra strong coffee and drank it till I'm bug-eyed and I still don't want to clean the pool or do anything.

So,, what herbs can I take that will give me a kick in the pants to get me started and maybe help my 02? I hate the jitters. I asked the Doctor what I could take and he said they stopped giving energy pills out in the 60's. Cheap Vitamin B12 from WalMart makes me jittery. It's only too bad the herbs are so expensive. Again, sorry to be so long, I could just use a little advice here. I feel absolutely lost and overwhelmed.

The pulmonary fibrosis came from my job as a Dental Technician. We used miles of asbestos, tearing it off a roll, sending dust from it into the air, then after burning it out at 1800 degrees or so, you use a hammer to break the mold for gold or metal crowns, surrounded with the asbestos. That sends fried particles from the asbestos into the air.The asbestos was about as thick as 2 business cards and 2 inches wide. I used that from 1969 until 1983 when they came up with a substitute. Then I had to sandblast the castings, that was really dusty using 60 micron aluminum oxide. It is so fine, if you throw a handfull into the air, it takes 3-4 minutes for it to all land. Also lots of plaster dust and grinding metal. I have also got a breath of muratic acid a couple times and blew out smoke. Anyways,, sorry, I just want you to see the whole picture. Sorry to be so long.

If you want, email me at kdsearsjr@hotmail.com
Thanks Winni!

Answer
Really depends on what type of pool it is-- above ground, inground vinly liner, fiberglass, concrete... Add some details and I'll help you. Perhaps you have gotten your terminology wrong. Are you talking about an automatic cleaner? (Some people refer to them as skimmers.) Fill me in.

what are some pool cleaning chemicals other then chlorine?

PEETAH

it could be methods too

Answer
Bromine is a popular alternative to chlorine. You can find it (and other chlorine free chemicals) at pool supply stores and websites. Salt chlorine generators are also a common alternative to traditional chlorine. Although the salt DOES product chlorine in your pool, it is a much lower lever and is much easier on hair, skin, and eyes than pure chlorine. Baking soda is NOT a substitute for chlorine and does not clean your pool in any way. Baking soda is Sodium Bicarbonate and is sometimes used in pools to adjust the alkalinity of water. However, it is not used to clean your pool water and should not be considered a cleaning agent. You should also make sure that you are using a high quality filter (DE or a sand alternative filter are best) and an automatic pool cleaner regularly.

What costs are involved in maintaining a pool?

Q. We are looking at buying a home with a large, above-ground pool. The house is on well/septic, so we would have to have water delivered. We've never owned a pool before and have no idea what the costs are to deliver water to fill the pool or for weekly/biweekly/monthly maintenance for a pool... and aren't sure if we pay someone to drain the pool for autumn and winter. Any ballpark estimates on costs (and/or links to helpful URLS) would be great, so that we can add these costs to the budget of buying this house and therefore seeing if we have to forget this house and look for another. Thanks!

Answer
ok. first, if u do not want to use the pool, it does not mean u cannot buy the house. u can let it sit there or turn it into a sand box or fort or give it away or even sell it.

two>shipping in water. it is my understanding that it can be VERY expensive. in santacruz CAlifornia my grandma says it costs her almost $300 usD for one truck tank. and it would last 3 days or so under normal use.

three>why couldn't you use the well water for the pool. aren't u going to bathe in it? also, if u are going to drink that water you need it tested. but definitely do look for a house that has it's own drinkable water.

next to last>safety. the pool is like a burning pit waiting to drown someone. not really but could be. and if it isn't one of yours it could be someone elses and that is sad too but also means you get sued. it needs a cover.

last>pool care.

a cover will help keep it clean and warm. but thing is, it can get so warm that you may want to leave the cover off in the summer so then you would need a fence.

the other way it gets cleaned is u scoop out debris but if u have a good filter u will not need to. A skimmer will be built in probably; that means debris floats in but can't float out. then also there may be a bottom crawler you can get; like an automatic full time vacum that crawls back and forth.

The only other maintenance it really needs is putting in chlorine. but also i think u do a pH check. My mom used to make me do it all for our pool and i had to test with a little vial and if the colors were here or there determined if i had to pour in the hydrochloric acid.

so that is two things i think. the pH and the chlorine. the chlorine i think they are a lot of the times using big pellets that time release. and then if the level drops big like after a pool party you might need to pour in a little extra.

draining the pool is done if you do not want to use it. like no heater cost. a clear or semi-opaque cover can heat it considerably but not enough in the coldest parts of winter plus in very cold areas you are looking at freeze and expansion; so draining water things is standard a lot of the time. garden hoses and lots of things can freeze with water inside and sometimes even break the thing that contains the water because of the expansion. this can be a danger during prolonged power outtages and your water pipes freeze under your house or such.

as far as how you drain it. if there is no plug, then siphon it with a garden hose. If you do not wish the chlorine to go onto vegetation, then let the level in the pool drop before draining it. it drops because chlorine evaporates to the atmosphere.

here is a directory of various home topic discussion boards:
http://www.dmoz.org/Home/

if you need parts or help then here is doughboy's site:
http://www.doughboypool.co.uk/

and more above ground pool sites:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=above+ground+pools+care&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7

i am not sure what extent the parts are interchangable. but they might be. so if they were it would pay to shop around if you ever had to replace the vinyl liner or such.

local pool supply is interested in helping you to know these things because they want you to buy from them. so query them as to chlorine tablet size and such. bring with you pool dimensions or other info.

best swimming pool cleaner?

Jim L

Answer
when you say Cleaner do you mean sanitizer for your water, such as Chlorine, Bromine, or Softswim/Baquacil (essentially the same product) Or do you mean Automatic cleaner for your pool for leaves and sand etc etc?

You need to be a little more specific......

Either way... Any of the above chemicals is proven and tested to be effective in cleaning your water and keeping it safe, in coordination with your pool pump and filter naturally..

As for a automatic cleaner.... there are many of them on the market, some are really busts, while some are effective, and actually do a good job. If you have an inground pool, i would say without a doubt that the best cleaner would be the Polaris automatic pool cleaner. IT only takes 1-2 hours a day to effectively clean your pool, and keep it clear of everything. There were many pools i would never have to vac out when i serviced them because of this cleaner.

As for an above ground pool, you are pretty much limited to different types of cleaners that are usually electric in nature, and are just thrown into the pool and when you plug them in, they go around and around and clean the pool...

If you are asking for a cleaner in regards to tile, Most of the major chemical suppliers for swimming pools make chemical cleaners for the tile, and the pool in general that will not harm the water or the balance of the water.

Again... without your question being more specific, i dont know if there is anything else i can help you with.

we have a big pool and wondering what we can do to keep it clean?

motheroffo

we purchased a big pool and we bought the shock treatment chlorine tablets more filters leaf skimmer ect u name it but our pump went out we are waiting on another one but the water kindof stinks and its not clear like before. also how can we get the leafs that are on the bottom? do they make something special for that please help

Answer
A manual leaf net that you can use to scoop the leaves out would work. Also, an automatic pool cleaner would be a good option. One of these cleaners, along with proper shock and chlorine, should have your pool clean in no time.

Is it time for a reality check for people who think the universe is the answer to our problems?

No Chance

We have 6 people in space, barely....250 miles up (only 238,650 more miles to go to reach the moon)

We have 4 R/C Cars worth billions of dollars each on mars, some working some not

and a Couple of dozen satellites poncing around the solar system

We cannot fly men to another planet......even mars

We cannot colonize the moon (sending constant supplies would be drastically expensive, and harmful to the earth)

Men cannot exist in space except with what they bring with them.....(although Air and pee are cleaned and re-ingested)

and we cannot get our stuff together down here on earth to even begin to overcome these problems

Do you really think......this is ever going to happen?

Or did our intelligent designer make the universe and space in such away, to keep us here.

Do you really think you can build the tower of babel....all over again?
The Tower of Babel reference was too obtuse for some I see

Answer
NASA has contributed more to the economy then you could in a 1000 life times. Only .7% of our taxes go to NASA. Less than a penny for every tax dollar you pay.

Since their creation in 1958 NASA has spent a total of about 500 billion dollars, that's a little more than what we spend on welfare EVERY YEAR! It's also a little more than what we spend on defense EVERY YEAR!

For every $1 NASA is given, it put $8 back into the economy. So at an average of $8 billion in yearly spending, an average of 56 billion in yearly contribution to the economy, NASA has contributed around 2-3 trillion dollars to the economy.

NASA is also responsible for the majority of what we know about the universe. Not to mention the MASSIVE amount of technology we enjoy that originated from NASA. Here's a few examples:

The following is a list of NASA technology and NASA spin-off technology: Virtually all computer improvements from vacuum tubes to integrated chips came from the space program, all of the satellite technology (which is huge, without that we would have lost the cold war), hydroponic gardening led to hardier species of plants able to survive arid regions reducing hunger, Teflon, forecasting weather events, memory foam, Velcro, the microchip, gps, cell service, plasma screens, rechargeable batteries, the MRI, microwave technologies, pharma and brain cancer drug improvements, ground processing scheduling system, semiconductor cubing, structural analysis, windows visual news reader, air quality monitor, virtual reality, advanced keyboards, database management systems, laser surveying, aircraft controls, lightweight compact disc, expert system software, design graphics, enriched baby food, water purification system, scratch-resistant lenses, pool purification, ribbed swimsuit, portable coolers/warmers, athletic shoes, dustbuster, shock-absorbing helmets, home security systems, smoke detectors, high-density batteries, trash compactors, food packaging and freeze-dried technology, composite golf clubs, quartz crystal timing equipment, microspheres, forest management, sensors for environmental control, wind monitor, telemetry systems, fire resistant material, radiation insulation, environmental analysis, noise abatement, pollution measuring devices, radioactive leak detector, digital imaging br east biopsy system, br east cancer detection, laser angioplasty, ultrasound skin damage assessment, human tissue stimulator, cool suit - for multiple sclerosis- cerebral palsy- spina bifida and other conditions, programmable pacemaker, ocular screening, automated urinalysis, medical gas analyzer, voice-controlled wheelchair, arteriosclerosis detection, ultrasound scanners, automatic insulin pump, portable x-ray device, invisible braces, dental arch wire, palate surgery technology, clean room apparel, implantable heart aid, bone analyzer, cataract surgery tools, magnetic liquids, welding sensor system, microlasers, magnetic bearing system, engine lubricant, interactive computer training, high-pressure waterstripping, advanced welding torch, gasoline vapor recovery, self-locking fasteners, machine tool software, laser wire stri pper, lubricant coating process, wireless communications, emergency rescue cutters, fireman's air tanks, self-righting life raft, doppler radar, lead poison detection, corrosion protection coating, robotic hands, studless winter tires, better brakes, weight saving technology, improved aircraft engine, advanced lubricants, the flywheel energy storage system, wing design for corporate jets, safer bridges, emission testing, airline wheelchairs, electric car, methane-powered vehicles, and aircraft design analysis.

So in the end, dismantling NASA would only eliminate jobs and cost us billions in lost money to the economy every year. I only wish the other 99.3% of my taxes were so well spent. Perhaps we should let NASA teach us something about how to run the country

Can I be sued for not paying this company for the bad job they did?

I hired a pool maintenance guy to fix the concrete hand rail "cups" around our pool because over time, and freezing/thawing, they had gotten bent and I could no longer get the hand rails to fit.

He gave us a quote and we agreed to go ahead with the work.
He did a terrible job. The concrete didn't match, he let the concrete dust and particles fall in the pool staining our liner, there were deep lines around the new concrete from where he cut out the old and concrete had fallen into the new cups and hardened making it impossible to get the handrails into them. He said he would be back to complete the job and fill in the grooves with concrete caulk when it had cured. He never came back.

I let him know about the problem and he said he would come out and repair everything and clean the liner too. Again, he never showed but the bill/invoice kept coming via mail. The next time I heard from him was to sell me a new electric motor to fix a problem I told him I was having with my automatic cover. We discussed this well before he started the handrail job. I was freaked that he had the nerve to try and drum up new business when he didn't even finish what he started. I told him once he fixed his last job we could talk about the next. Again, I didn't hear from him for weeks but the invoice kept coming, now with finance charges.
I sent him an email with pictures of his shoddy work asking him to come and fix it. We arranged to have him perform the repairs and I took a day off of work and he never showed. I called him to see why he hadn't showed and received no response. A week later he came to the house while I wasn't home (he always manages to miss our appointments and show while I am not there. It's happened several times) and cleaned the spilled concrete out of the cups and sent me an email saying that when he examined them there was no concrete in them.

He still keeps sending me invoices with accumulated finance charges and has still not fixed the problems. I am at the point now where I just don't want the guy coming around because I don't trust him and the felonious looking characters that work for him.

We don't have a signed contract.

My questions are:
What can I do in this situation?
The invoices come in my (misspelled) name and the house is in my fiancees name, can he put a lien on the home?
The work will need to be done again at some point and not by him. Can I send him the bill for repairs, negating the bills he has been sending me?

I am sick of people doing shoddy jobs or not completing them and expecting to be paid. What can I do?

Answer
They can sue, sure. That doesn't mean they'll get anything. And you may have a counter claim.

the best to buy? Did you put sand under yours?

Answer
I've had a pool all my life and enjoy every second of it!

If you manually clean your pool you shouldn't spend more than 1-1 1/2 hours per week on it - thats it! I spend 1-2 min per day just testing the water and keeping my chemicals balanced. The majority of my time is cleaning the bottom. I purchased the Hayward Aqua Bug which is an automatic cleaner and it cleans my pool for me! The best $120 I ever spent! All I do is skim the top of the pool and hop in! I spend MAYBE 30 min per week total doing everything!

As far as chemicals - I use Bleach, Borax and Baking soda! Plain unscented bleach will sanitize your pool just the same as the expensive shock or chlorine you buy at the pool stores. I'll post the websites that will help you!

Good Luck

How should you clean swimming pool cartridges?

Barb

My pool company said to soak them in diluted muratic acid. But, what do you do with the leftover solution? I can't just dump it on the driveway because it would flow onto the lawn and kill the grass.

Answer
Don't soak them in muriatic acid solution. Use a mixture of water and automatic dishwasher detergent. Rinse well and they are ready to go. Or take them to the car wash. (Don't "wax" them though!)

What are the ways to Clean a Swimming Pool Filter ?

montoya

Answer
If it's a cartridge filter first hose it off, then soak in a mild solution of automatic dishwasher detergent. (This removes oils you can't see.) Then rinse thoroughly.

If a DE filter hose off and give a mild acid wash. Rinse and reinstall, adding new DE.

If a sand filter just change the sand.

Has anyone used an automatic pool cleaner on an endless pool swim spa?

Nas-Cat

Just wondering if anyone has tried connecting one of the aquabot type pool cleaners up on an "endless pool"?

Answer
This "endless pool" what we call a jet pool? You swim against the current, it's about 8 feet long? If so, nope, why would you? It's like getting out an industrial shop vac to pick up a grain of sand. There's not enough of the pool for one to vac. Likely as well, it wouldn't do a great job. Too tight a space for their turning radius.
This was a joke, right?

i have an indoor swimming pool in my house and its plain white with but i want to paint it...does anybody know with what kind of paint should i paint it and how long should i let it dry before i could refill it again

Answer
One of the most common pool surfaces is paint. Pool paint comes in many different colors, and is an inexpensive coating compared to other surfaces. There are three types of pool paint. Epoxy paint, for new construction, and pools painted previously with epoxy paint. It is long lasting, durable and will stand up to UV rays, automatic pool cleaners and chemical treatments. Epoxy paint will last about 7 - 10 years.

Another type of pool paint is chlorinated rubber base. Rubber base is not as durable or expensive as epoxy paint, but is a dependable, easy to use, inexpensive pool paint. It is easy to apply, comes in many colors and will last about 3 - 5 years.

Last but not least, is water based acrylic pool paint. This paint can be used on any type of surface, is easy to apply, and cleans up with water. This type of pool paint is ideal for commercial applications that are repainted on a regular basis. It should last about 2 - 3 years.

Whatever paint you use, it is important to follow manufactureâs instructions, follow recommended safety guidelines and make sure you prepare the pool properly. Preparation is the most important step in pool painting. Without the proper preparation the paint will not bond with the wall or existing surface.

How do i decrease the dead bugs that float on my pool surface?

Booklover

We have a screened in pool, but all these tiny little flies/gnats (bugs of some kind) get in through the screens and then die on our pool surface. Since we have an automatic pool cleaner on the bottom of the pool, there is nothing cleaning the surface of the pool, and before I get in I have to spend fifteen minutes skimming the surface. Its gross! Any way to stop or prevent them? Or at least get them to sink so that the automatic cleaner will scoop them up from the bottom of the pool?
To the third response - our pool is in a screened in lanai. These aren't mosquitos I'm talking about - they are tiny little bugs that get through those screens. Thanks for the thought though.

Answer
It could be several things. First off if you have that many bugs getting in, fix that
Next if your screened in area has many plants, they could be breeding on your plants. So get them sprayed or treated. Are they all the same kind of bugs? Collect some with your skinner screen and put them on a paper towel. After the towel dries, fold it up and take them to your gardening store. They'll know what kind of bugs they are and what you should treat them with.
Next,,, Your skimmer is sub post to get anything (everything) that floats. Start with your jets. If you look at them, there is a ring and a ball that has a hole where the water comes out from. They are under the water and on the sides. They should be turned so that they are set all the same, all left or right and going up slightly. You may need to loosen the ring, to get the ball to move, so you can direct where they point. You want that they get the surface of your pool moving in a circular current around your pool. This will get anything floating on the surface away from the middle and out to the sides. Then your skimmer will suck them in when their close and going by.
My pool allows water into the pump to come from the cleaner robot and there is a valve that allows water from the skimmer. It sounds like that valve, if you got one, is closed off. See if you have one and open it part way. Not all the way, just enough so some water is going in and it is skimming. Every pool has a skimmer and that is what keeps the surface clean but they must draw in water to so. There has to be a way for water to get to the pump when it's on or it will never skim. If that can't happen when your bottom cleaner is on, something's not right. Good luck SS

What's The Worst Paragraph You've Ever Read?

The title says all. What book was it from, what was it about, and if you can, post it! Also, why do you hate it?

MIne would probably be from Twilight when Edward admits he is a vampire. Bella thought she was crazy, so all he had to do is assure he wasn't and laugh it off. It would have been so much easier then causing her so many problems (which is partly her fault too.) I have the book, maybe I will post it later.
@Mountain Jew - How am I suppose to make it more descriptive? I'm posting the paragraph later and am going to explain exactly what I hate about it. >.>
@Roxas - That made my head hurt! Just wow.

@Mrin - I've tried reading that. It's funny because if you enter "worst fanfic ever" on google, it shows up. :)
@Kukui USA - Are you sure that's a paragraph? o.O That author is crazy.

Answer
WORST I've ever read? This from Marienbad My Love, although I kinda like it, but I hate it because it makes no sense, but it somewhat maintains itself, you know what I mean right? Sorry if it is too long but that's the WHOLE paragraph. The author is aiming for longest paragraph, book title and novel EDIT: yep, that's the whole paragraph out of 17 million words :

Programmed death travel is the way that leads back to the Wild West, crossing into the House of Silence, a great black rent, a torn sky, a rip in the master film in the middle of shooting the cattle season, my dear old trail-weary friend, 19th century frontier research into time travel and silicone-chlorine bonds of the broken shell. No death in vain. All of the flesh-coated aliens have arrived, pouring over the edge of the sacred frontier heavens. Is it an alien invasion? Automatic control, crossing into the House of Silence world. Heavy death fog of milky white galaxies. I can just make out the original celestial orbit. The robot brakes, but I canât see anything. I begin honking but no luck. Inside the house, outside by the swimming pool, but itâs in the front. Watch out for the robotic pool cleaner. This is a troubling sight, a world of silicone copies, a world without looks. Here at the next door neighborâs house we can make out flesh-coated machine men sliding, colliding in the way that leads to death. I have a rock under my pool liner?

iamasurvey

We bought an above ground pool and installed it ourselves. It took us 5 tries but we finally got it up and filled and then noticed that there is a pointy rock about the size of a 50 cent piece sticking up under the liner. I have no idea how we missed it but we did so now we don't know what to do! We are afraid to try and push it down because it's probably going to poke a hole in the liner.. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do with it? We have 6 kids so I'm sure if we leave it in there its going to eventually get a hole there with the kids walking on it all the time. Its a 24' x 52" pool so we really don't want to drain it and start over, cause like I said this is the 5th time and 2 other times we had it half full and had to drain it. Someone please help!!!

Answer
Couple of options.
1/ New liner and new install so it's not going to be a hardship on that liner to drain it, crawl under from a convenient spot, grab that offending rock , retrace your crawl and smooth the bottom as you retreat.
2/ Live with it until it holes. Unpleasant for the feet and will happen sooner if you have an automatic pool cleaner.
3/ Bite the bullet and grab a knife. Have a patch kit and liner sample large enough to to the patch. Slice at the rock, grab it and apply your patch quickly so that your sand bottom doesn't start creating a channel as it erodes.

Planning on having a pool built in back yard?

russrimm

So I'm finally going to do it. I have wanted an in-ground gunite pool all my life. I had a couple of builders out to measure and due to utility easements and sewer lines, etc, I can only get about a 10' x 30', not sure how big that is really, still have to 'map it out' in the yard. So my questions are - what options should I get? Is the colored luminescent light worth it? I'm thinking of getting the salt-water chlorination system as well. What about 250,000 BTU vs 400,000 BTU for the hottub? Any kind of 'arc fountain' type things? What's worth it and what's not? Is Jandy or Hayward better for pump/filter/automatic pool vacuum? Would it be worth it for me to pay an extra $500+ to have my sewer line re-directed?
P.S. I'm in Houston, TX

Answer
It sounds like money isn't that impotent to you so go for your dreams.

I like the fiber optic lights they are very nice. Save your money on the heater & go with the cheaper one, onece it is heated eather will maintain it at that size. Most people don't buy a heater at all & the ones that do most of them dont run them because it cost to much & thay don't use the pool enough to make it worth while. The sewer I would think thay would rerout it for free if you suply the pipe & cupplers to be able to sell you a bigger pool(it wouldn't hurt to ask since thay have to dig it up to start with or just have them dig it up & you lay the pipe). Go with the best filter he sells that you are willing to pay up frount for it will save you in chems & services in the long run. I would also like to add if you have seen the frogs & turtles that hook to the jet & swim around & clean your pool you should get one(This is the auto pool vac). These seem very expencive for what they are but most people don't have the time or disaplin to clean there pool & this will help alot. You know with that green look or the dirt on the bottum that you keep saying you will take care of tomarrow. One last thing get a very good pool cover. This is the most inportent part aside from the water & just after chems.

Have fun & good luck.

What are the approximate costs for upkeep of an above ground pool?

Charmian O

My wife and I are looking at buying a house, and it comes with an above ground pool (Looks like about 15' x 30'. I've heard from a lot of people that the maintenance and upkeep of a pool is more expensive and time consuming than it's worth... but not one of the people I've heard that from has a pool. I know the insurance will be higher (Don't know how much, but I know it'll be higher)... but I don't know anything else. How much /month or /year is the cost of the chemicals and maintenance? How much time is involved in keeping it up? Thanks!

Answer
Total chemicals for an above ground pool in the snow belt should top $250 for the season. If you stay on top of the pool and test frequently this should really be $150. Testing takes 30 seconds and will tell you what to do if the water is not balanced. the more often you test and balance the cheaper the annual bill will be. If you attempt do maintain your pool once/ week you will have a few weeks when the water turns green. This will cost you $30-$50 and 2-4 hours of time to clean up the mess. If you and your wife are very busy people and cannot dedicate the time to test and balance you will have a nightmare. I tell my customers to test and balance chems every other day. If they have a party or itâs 100 degrees out then you want to do this daily. Cleaning the pool and filter will take you 1 hour per week (if you have many trees in your yard you may need to do this twice per week). Opening and closing a pool is very easy, however if you havenât done this pay somebody and watch!!!! We have hints about removing the cover without allowing the muck water to fall into the clean pool water. (roughly $175-$250)

I look at it two ways:

If you like the house but donât like the pool, tear it down; around Chicago the rate is $300- $700 for removal.

If you like it but cannot dedicate the time hire a svc company again in Chicago the rate is $35- $50 per weekly visit (this includes the cleaning).

Testing will take you ten times to understand fully (two weeks). All chemicals have instructions on the rear for the proper dosage.

The best product that will make your pool 50% less maintenance is an AUTOMATIC chemical feeder... this puts a constant amount of chlorine or bromine into your pool all the time. Most people screw up and water turns green because they forgot to add some chlorine... this way even if you forget to test a couple of days you know the pool is still having some chlorine added to it. These run between $50 and $100 installation is cake if you have a drill.

Good luck
