Why won't my 'Easy-Vac' automatic vacuum work properly in my pool? I'm constantly having to stand over it to backwash/rinse it to ensure that it continues to operate correctly and my pool isn't even that dirty, we just purchased a brand new pump, sand for the filter and cleaned it out as well, and the vacuum is also brand new. I'm positive it has no air leaks. please help, I'm beyond lost

how do above ground automatic pool cleaners work??

Answer
the most common form of pool cleaners are suction cleaners which have a hose that simply attaches through the skimmer. (If the pool has a main drain, it would need to be closed using the valve). The cleaner automatically moves around the bottom of the pool, sucking debris off the bottom of the pool and trapping it in the pump basket and filter. The pump basket should be emptied before and after the cleaning cycle. And the filter should be cleaned after cleaning the pool. Any large debris (leaves, sticks, and such) should be removed from the pool with a leaf rake before hooking up cleaner to prevent clogging up plumbing and allowing for a more effecient cleaning cycle. If you are considering purchasing a cleaner, I highly recommend the Zodiac brand. ( By the way, incase you're wondering, I own a swimming pool company and would be more than happy to answer any other questions you may have)

i have a side suction that uses a skimmer. It is a concrete underground pool

Answer
First off I need more info. Is your pool equipped with an automatic pool cleaner line? Does it have a booster pump to propel a cleaner? Let me clarify. Automatic cleaners fall into two categories. Suction side and pressure side. Suction side cleaners operate off the filter pumps suction. Typically they plug into a skimmer, thereby diverting the skimming action to operate the cleaner. There are any number of these on the market. Which is best depends on several factors. Is your pool inground gunite (concrete) or vinyl? What type of debris gets in the pool THE MOST? (Leaves, sand, grass clippings, etc.)
Pressure side cleaners operate from the pressure (return) side. They either must have a dedicated pool cleaner line (installed when the pool is built) or work off a return fitting. Some cleaners require a separate booster pump to drive them, others do not. Again we need to know if the pool is gunite or vinyl and what type of debris is most prevalent. Answer these questions and I can direct you to the cleaner line I've had the most reliable service from. (Been in the pool business 35 years, so I've seen more than a few cleaners!.)

Question for Inground pool owners?

Dani

We are a family of 4 and wanting to buy a house with an inground pool. We have never owned a house with a pool before, so we are basically clueless as to what all it entails. I know we would use the pool a lot. So, we were wondering:

1. How much is upkeep (pool service, chemicals, etc.)
2. How much does it add to your house taxes
3. We live in Arizona, so would it be beneficial to have saltwater or chlorine
4. Anything else we need to consider / advice

Thanks in advance!!

Answer
1. I've found that upkeep costs differ from season to season; we'll spend far more on the pool during the swimming season than in the winter months. I have an in-ground gunite, and in the summer, ballpark cost figure I would guess would be $500 total. No pool service or hired cleaner; we do it all ourselves. Again, this is an estimate!!! It depends a lot on where you buy your supplies, how often you use your pool, etc.

2. I am not aware of any huge chunk it costs to our property taxes, if anything at all. Hell, our homeowner's insurance is only $8 a year more for our pool, and that's because we have a diving board.

3. I've heard some pretty great things about saltwater pools. Chlorine is derived from salt, so maintenance is supposed to be a lot easier and less time-consuming.

4. If you do get a pool, make sure you buy locks for all gates leading into your back yard, if they don't have any already. I use just a simple locker-combination lock on mine.

Pools can be time-consuming if you want them looking great day after day, so if you want a great looking pool but don't want to spend a lot of time on it, you should seriously reconsider. I don't consider cleaning mine a chore; I wanted a pool in my house so I consider myself responsible for it's care. It is a hobby for me, as swimming is my favorite sport.

Essential cleaning supplies: a brush, a vacuum (manual or automatic; automatic will wash hours of cleaning time off your hands), a hose that covers the length and depth of the pool, a skimmer pole, skimmer net; I have one flat one and one that's a basket, a chemical test kit to see how the chemcial levels in your water are, and a "backflow" garden hose attachment for possible clogs in your underground pipes. Depending on your pump system too, you might also require a backwash hose. Also keep in good supply of chlorine tabs (big duh, right?!), pH add and/or decrease, alkalinity plus, some filter aid (sand or DE, again depending on what kind of filter you have) and some bags of shock, just for extra measure. I don't do this myself, but I know some pool owners also keep algaecide handy, even though you only need to use that for an algae outbreak in your water. But that should only happen if you don't take care of it! And I tell you all of this because if you have to buy all that stuff at once, it will get VERY expensive. We specifically looked for a pool that already had all the equipment there; we just had to buy the chemicals and even then, the water was already in pretty good shape so we didn't have to buy every single chemical all at once.

I hope I didn't ramble on too much. But I enjoy my swimming pool immensely and enjoy entertaining my friends and family with it. It's a wonderful investment, as long as you don't consider taking care of it a problem. Happy swimming!

I have a Polaris 360. Does a good job for the amount of money. Gets stuck in the corners quite allot. I've had it for 3 years and the only thing I have had to do is change the wheels. They were worn down. I also have changed the bag that collects the debris.

i need to buy an auotmatic pool cleaner. i've heard some bad things about the polaris and i'm thinking of going with the kreepy krauly instead. has anyone used these? which one will last longer and work better?

Answer
Two different animals. Kreepy is a suctiom side cleaner. Polaris is pressure side. Polaris makes a bunch of models. Choosing which one is best for you is a challenge in itself. (Polaris also makes a suction side unit, by the way.) Personally I much prefer Kreepy over Polaris. It is simpler. Has one moving part. Easier to repair. Average repair is much cheaper than Polaris. Frankly, when I had my pool store I finally quit selling Polaris products. I wasn't happy with the overall quality of the units. Every one I sold became more of a liability for the store. I'd opt for Kreepy if I were you.

Asking price for a 27 foot above ground swimming pool?

Dain K

I have a 27 foot above ground swimming pool (3 years old) that I am trying to sell. It is in very good condition with a pump/filter, solar and winter covers, and accessories such stairs and automatic cleaner. The liner is fine now, but it may need to be replaced when torn down, but no idea. Is $1500 too much to ask? $1000? $500? I'm clueless on this.

Answer
Dain, i already answered your question on this with your other question when you referred to your pool as a 24 foot Round pool.

I gave it a second thought after posting, and seeing this message, IF you want to sell your pool, or get rid of it, you might want to post an ad for used pool equipment. A Pump/motor usually goes for 3-400 bucks, and the filter could be a few hundred more, but the equipment is used, so if you get someone to buy it for 500 dollars you should consider yourself lucky. Place an add for the equipment, and as a bonus they can have the pool for free. you might get a taker, But refer to my other message where i talked about liability. You don't want to be held responsible when the pool leaves your yard, so should something happen in 2 weeks, whether it is faultyequipment or improper installation, just make sure you dont get caught up in it.

It makes no sense to try and make a few bucks back on your pool that is 3 years old, and then by some string of bad luck, have someone come knocking on your door looking for damages because the ladder or steps failed and someone got injured. Sure it could be from the new owner installing equipment improperly, and you have no control over it, But is it really worth the hassle? Sell your used equipment, people will buy it. Especially now where people are going to have equipment failures and problems from the past winter, and dismantle your pool and put it on the side of the road, i guarantee someone will load it and take it away, even if there is no equipment.

My question is can you make the water in your automatic swimming pool cleaner's pipes spiral. Speeding up water flow, greater suction power, faster automatic swimming pool cleaner, a turning force is created on the swimming pool pipes.
The automatic swimming pool cleaner will be able to turn itself out of tight spots.

Answer
Try a Hayward Navigator, it turns itself out of steps and ledges and spends more time cleaning the pool!

You're welcome!!

How often do you change the sand in a Hayward pool filter?

dm

I have a 9 year old Hayward sand pool filter that seems to be having trouble catching all the dirt from the bottom of my pool. When I use my automatic pool cleaner it seems to only run a short time before it just quits. I'm guessing it's time for a sand change? I did change the sand a few years back...

Answer
i own a pool company.you should change the sand every three (3) years.but try back washing and rinsing the lines first and see if that helps.dont let pressure on tank get above 20 pounds or you will crack the lateral lines in your filter

Does anyone know how to best remove ash from the bottom of a spa?

socalgal

My pool has ash all over the bottom after all the fires in So.Cal. The automatic pool cleaner is picking most of it up in the pool, but it doesn't clean the spa. Should I drain the spa, or is there some way to clean the water?

Answer
We are in the same boat. We have a spa vacuum but it isn't doing such a great job because the ash gets stirred up and starts floating. We plan to drain the spa this weekend and then use the wet/dry vac once the ash settles into the bottom of the spa once it is drained.

Unfortunately, the pool cleaner for my pool has broken. It's an older model Polaris. I was wondering, does anyone have any insight on new pool sweeps?

Answer
I have something called the Dolphin.. If you're putting the right chemicals in your pool and use this its awsome all you have to do is plug it in flip the switch and drop in the pool. In the morning you can just take it and clean it. It's really simple, my ten yr. old brother does it.. lol

where can i find reviews of automatic swimming pool cleaners (like dolphin, aquabot, etc)?

john h

Answer
I chcked out the links in the answers above me and found a stange site that said nothing but had lots of google ads.The first thing you must decide is what TYPE of cleaner you want:

1)a pressure type cleaner (runs off of water pressure, usually its own pump, attached to your pool return plumbing)

2)a suction type cleaner that is attached to your skimmer or suction plumbing

3)a self powered cleaner that you plug in or recharge and throw in pool.

when you have decided what type you want, then a decision can be made as to which is the best...pressure types are good for leaves...suction types are cheaper and good on dirt, self powered units are more expensive...I have a website I just put up this january..in a few weeks,I will have photos and information there regarding pool cleaners: http://swimming-pool-information.com

We recently installed a Pentair Water Poolshark Automatic Pool cleaner and it seems to have left a white line mark, that is rough to touch, on the bottom of all sides of the pool and especially the corners. Has anyone else had this experience and will it damage the pool. Thank you.

Which is CHEAPER to install, a fiberglass pool or concrete pool.?

moonstar

Also, which is easier to maintain and keep clean. I've been doing research but have found mixed messages. Some people say concrete is cheaper and some say fiberglass is cheaper. Please help!Confused...

Answer
To be honest, neither is cheaper - it depends on what company you go to and what extras you want with your pool (eg: pool lights, fencing, landscaping, automatic cleaners, chlorinator etc...)

In the long run a fibreglass pool is easier to maintain. If heating the pool the fibreglass will retain the heat longer whereas a concrete pool will suck alot of the heat into the ground.

Fibreglass also use next to nothing with chemicals. You treat them maybe once a month depending on the season but with concrete you need to use alot more chemicals such as hardener and calcium remover etc. Fibreglass pools dont grow calcium as quick as a concrete. You will normally have calcium in a concrete pool within the first year and fibreglass is normally 7 years.

Another thing to note is installation times. Fibreglass will normally be installed within two weeks and concrete can take up to 6 months or more depending on the weather. So site costs can add up if the site is open longer.

Personally i prefer fibreglass. It is much nicer towards you swim wear and after 8 hours of continuous swimming it wont hurt your feet (Pebblecrete rips up your feet!)

Its personal preference really. The bad thing about fibreglass is that its pretty much what you see is what you get, in terms of sizes and shapes.

Good luck!

Anyone know an easy way to get wrinkles from the bottom of a pool liner (above ground) after water is in?

best automatic pool cleaner for vinyl pools on ... pool shape rectangle lap kidney l shape round oval pool surfaces vinyl
best automatic pool cleaner for vinyl pools image

Troy

Just put up a new above ground pool and the installers left some pretty big wrinkles in the bottom of the liner. Since there's already water in it, how can this be fixed without emptying it completely?

Answer
If it was an inch of water or so, you can push the wrinkles out towards the wall but if there's more water than that in there, sorry, ain't gonna happen. Normally during an installation , there's some one in the pool scouting out wrinkles as the pool fills and the liner vac is going (they did use a vacuum to suck the air out behind the liner to remove the wrinkles, right?). That way you can catch them and push them out before you get to the point where there's an inch of water.
Sometimes you'll see small wrinkles that are actually what we call packing creases. The liner has been in a box , folded for some time. It will get creases. Most are minor and will work themselves out if they are rounded at the top. If they are sharp ridged, they need help. Normally during the fill stage, with the liner vac going and only half an inch of water in the pool, you can get these stubborn packing creases out with a kettle of boiling water poured on the area. That usually works to make the vinyl pliable enough that the weight of the water will push out the wrinkle, if there's not much of a ridge.

Your choices here are two.
If they're minor, you may choose to live with them. They won't be going away though and if you use an automatic cleaner, the cleaner head may eventually wear through the ridge of the crease, causing a leak.
If they are large or have a sharp ridge, I'd be getting the installers back to drain and kick the wrinkles out very soon.

what is the correct vacuuming equipment for a 10,000 gallon pool?

generallee

Answer
It depends on what kind of vaccuming you want. Automatic or manual. There are several choices for automatic pool sweepers. Some work off the suction side of your filter, and others use the return water for power.
For manual vacuuming, you will need a pole, vacuum hose, and vacuum attachment. There are two types of vacuum attachments, one is for vinyl lined pools(has brushes on it instead of wheels), one is for standard gunnite pools (has wheels on the bottom).
To vacuum manually: First turn on your filter. Attach the vacuum attachment to the pole, then one end of the hose to the attachment. Hold the hose and insert the vacuum head attachment into the water. Let it sink to the bottom, then keep feeding the hose into the water. This will fill the vacuum hose with water. When you get the entire hose filled with water, insert the end into the skimmer hole that sucks water into the filter. Make sure you get a vacuum hose that's long enough to reach all areas of the pool.
For help selecting an automatic pool cleaner, see your local pool store. Hope this helps.
