what is the best underground auto pool cleaners?

automatic pool cleaners inground on ... CLEANER - Inground Pool Automatic Swimming Pool Cleaners - Auto Pool

bucs

i have a side suction that uses a skimmer. It is a concrete underground pool

Answer
First off I need more info. Is your pool equipped with an automatic pool cleaner line? Does it have a booster pump to propel a cleaner? Let me clarify. Automatic cleaners fall into two categories. Suction side and pressure side. Suction side cleaners operate off the filter pumps suction. Typically they plug into a skimmer, thereby diverting the skimming action to operate the cleaner. There are any number of these on the market. Which is best depends on several factors. Is your pool inground gunite (concrete) or vinyl? What type of debris gets in the pool THE MOST? (Leaves, sand, grass clippings, etc.)
Pressure side cleaners operate from the pressure (return) side. They either must have a dedicated pool cleaner line (installed when the pool is built) or work off a return fitting. Some cleaners require a separate booster pump to drive them, others do not. Again we need to know if the pool is gunite or vinyl and what type of debris is most prevalent. Answer these questions and I can direct you to the cleaner line I've had the most reliable service from. (Been in the pool business 35 years, so I've seen more than a few cleaners!.)

My self cleaning pool's jet's are malfunctioning...HELP!?

RogerE

My inground pool has a timed automatic self cleaning system that has jets built into the bottom at various points that come on and push water all around the pool and, I guess, eventually going through the filter at the bottom and the skimmer at the top. When my pool pump kicks on, only one set (2) jets at one end come on and they stay on the entire cycle of 4 hours and the other jets don't rotate like they have been since I bought the house last year. Anyone know how I can check the problem? or where the malfunction may be occurring? Thanks!...Roger

Answer
beside the pool you should have like a canister that will have a band clamp around the belly. take that apart and inspect the gears...well first make sure the canister is not on pause.......if it is just switch it back to activate. Also those heads in the bottom of the pool do come out. you might need a specific tool to remove them but they pop out and could be full of calcium and all the heads just need to be cleaned....thats about all the info i can give you....maybe someone else has had more experience with in-floor cleaners.

For suction side cleaners I like the Kreepy Krauly. For pressure side I'd go with Letro Legend.

which automatic pool cleaner is better, kreepy krauly or polaris?

mrh007

i need to buy an auotmatic pool cleaner. i've heard some bad things about the polaris and i'm thinking of going with the kreepy krauly instead. has anyone used these? which one will last longer and work better?

Answer
Two different animals. Kreepy is a suctiom side cleaner. Polaris is pressure side. Polaris makes a bunch of models. Choosing which one is best for you is a challenge in itself. (Polaris also makes a suction side unit, by the way.) Personally I much prefer Kreepy over Polaris. It is simpler. Has one moving part. Easier to repair. Average repair is much cheaper than Polaris. Frankly, when I had my pool store I finally quit selling Polaris products. I wasn't happy with the overall quality of the units. Every one I sold became more of a liability for the store. I'd opt for Kreepy if I were you.

Pool questions(water is cloudy even though chemistry is perfect)?

automatic pool cleaner robot image

Robin S

Had our pool plastered(marcite) in may 07.pool started getting very cloudy in june.We have our water inspected and tested every week by professional company. The ph, alkanility, calcium, TDS and bromine was perfect. the water still would not clear up. When we vacuum the pool with automatic robot we find that there is lot of white dust(plaster dust?)in the vacuum filter. Changd water and power washed and removed all the plaster(?) debris in oct07.Within a month water was cloudy.Chemistry is perfect but water is still cloudy. in the vacuum filter i can still see lot of white sandy/chauky paste. Do you think the water is cloudy because of plaster mixing with water? bad plaster job? I am not sure if that is plaster dust though? What should be do? Change water again? Is the plaster causing the problem? I wonder why the filter wont remove the plaster dust. Sand in the filter is new. pump is working fine. Change the water again? Paint the pool with epoxy or something or replaster ?
Yes. we tried everything. clarifier. filter aid for the sand filter. Nothing works? Does the plaster dust come off even after 8-10 months? i would think that even if they did a bad job, the plaster should have come off and filtered by now.
Yes. the filter runs 24 hours non-stop. its back washed regularly. Tested for leaks. There is none. When water was changed in october, i washed all the dust/debri with pressure washer..

Answer
It is likely that the plaster is coming off into the water. I find it curious though that it didn't change the pH level in your pool.

Anyway, you will need to clean out the filters because they can only handle so much. It may be a while before it's all cleaned up.

I don't think that the plastering job was bad, but the cleanup probably left some to be desired. You'll likely have to get in there and clean it by hand. The robots don't really scrub very well, they more or less collect junk from the water.

What's The Worst Paragraph You've Ever Read?

The title says all. What book was it from, what was it about, and if you can, post it! Also, why do you hate it?

MIne would probably be from Twilight when Edward admits he is a vampire. Bella thought she was crazy, so all he had to do is assure he wasn't and laugh it off. It would have been so much easier then causing her so many problems (which is partly her fault too.) I have the book, maybe I will post it later.
@Mountain Jew - How am I suppose to make it more descriptive? I'm posting the paragraph later and am going to explain exactly what I hate about it. >.>

iRobot makes the best pool cleaner but I have to tell you, they sure are proud of it. You'll know what I mean when you look at the price. What is so nice about it is that it will clean the steps, walls all the way to the top, and it's fast. They have two different models depending on the type of pool you have. I have a below ground pool and am trying to find reviews on automatic pool cleaners. Consumer Reports doesn't seem to have anything on the subject :( Can anyone lend some insight and perspective on automatic pool cleaners and make a recommendation? Much thanks in advance.

Answer
Suction-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

In researching suction-side cleaners, weâve found that the Stanley PoolTec DLX In-Ground Automatic Pool Vacuum Cleaner is the newest and most innovative way to keep your pool clean. The trusted brand of Stanley, with its master craftsmanship and innovative design provides a cleaner that is easy to install and operate and provides continuous cleaning of most in-ground pools. Operating with your poolâs filter, this suction cleaning mechanism maintains a proper angle for optimal performance while cleaning pools with depths of 9 ft.

Pressure-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

If you are looking for a pressure-side cleaner and you want your pool cleaned quickly and completely, we recommend the Kreepy Krauly Legend cleaner from Pentair. A host of design features combine to keep the Legend cleaner on the move, thoroughly cleaning most pools in just 1 to 3 hours. The debris channel and large intake throat handles leaves, twigs and other large debris with ease. The Front-wheel drive generates maximum traction on inclined surfaces for total coverage of pool bottom and walls. The independent booster pump helps provide optimum cleaning power and unimpeded surface skimming. Another great feature is that disposable cleaner bags are also availableâno need to empty or touch debris again.

Robotic / Electronic Automatic Pool Cleaners

Many consumers are now selecting incredibly efficient robotic units as their cleaners of choice. These are great at cleaning small debris and sand as well as one of the only types that clean and scrub the walls and tile line. The Dolphin Supreme M3 and M4 from Maytronics are great options for robotic cleaners. These award-winning models have features that are designed for customers and are backed by the Maytronics name which has provided 25 years of technological leadership. Not only are Dolphin M3 and M4 energy efficient (average cost of less than $0.15 to clean the pool), but they have weekly timers where a user can preset cleanings throughout the week.

Here are some more links to more information. I hope this helps.

I am wondering what is the best pool cleaner for a fiberglass pool, i have heard many different opinions from stores trying to sell their products, some say baracuda X7 is the best then another store said no way for a fiberglass pool, that i should use polaris. Anyone have any input? what are my options?

Answer
i own a pool company.and have seen many different auto pool cleaners.( 13 years) and by far a polaris would be your best bet.however you would be better off if you by one online as it is cheaper.look for SWIMMING POOL DEALERS. buying one online you cut out the middle man because of the price mark up they have.if you go to a pool store expect to pay a thousand 1000.00 dollars or more.buy it online most of the time it is cheaper

my automatic pool cleaner is not working?

Justice

what should i do ro check out to see wny my automatic pool cleaner(polaris turtle) is not working?

Answer
I cannot find the website for polaris, seems they were sold not too long ago. I could be wrong on that.

If your turtle plugs into the skimmer or fitting in the water and there is not a separate pump to operate it, likely the turtle is a suction side automatic cleaner.

Suction side automatic cleaners all have something in common and that is when your filter is getting dirty the amount of water going through your cleaner and filter is way down. Inside your cleaner is a water paddle wheel that makes the turtle go.

Check your turtle to see if the passage ways are clean and clear and the hose is also, then clean out your filter. A clean filter should develop about 16-20psi when clean. When dirty and needing cleaning the pressure is about 26-30 or a 10 psi gain. Best to clean before 10 psi but surely by 10 psi.

You're welcome!!

Anyone here know why water makes a stain in the bathtub?

automatic pool cleaner hose on Water Wand Filter Cartridge Cleaner
automatic pool cleaner hose image

B

My water makes a pink slimy stain when it pools up somewhere for a day or two. It stains the drain and the toilet. Also, when you leave a few drops of water in the bathtub, a pink stain appears. Its gross, it comes off with soap. But I wonder why it does that?

Answer
Check this out....it is off the internet:

What White Water Mold is & what it looks like:

a naturally occurring bacterium (of the newly formed genus Methylobacterium) (this is NOT a form of Algae, it is animal not vegetable)
Pink-pigmented, forms a heavy, protective slime coating providing the organism with an unusually high level of protection, methanol consuming, oftentimes found WITH White Water Mold
that is very resilient against halogen-based (chlorine, bromine) as well as non-halogen sanitizers or germicides can remain a contaminant even after treatment
this is NOT a biguanide problem ONLY
bacterium has an affinity for the matrix that exists on the surface of PVC plastics; it will attach itself to & inside of the matrix, allowing it to re-contaminate long after it appears that it has been destroyed (includes pool toys, floats, ladders, steps, fountains, automatic pool cleaner parts, skimmer baskets, weirs, directional fittings, garden hoses, etc.)
small quantities can lead to a re-establishment of the problem
caused by improper water & pool maintenance, environment, poor circulation
prefers areas that are "dark" (not exposed to direct sunlight) & with "slow moving" water
** in another industry, medical technology, this bacterium occurs regularly in laboratory tubing

White Water Mold & Pink Slime are NOT CAUSED BY USING BIGUANIDES (Soft Swim, Baquacil, Polyclear, etc.)!
It is an environmental issue.

Prevention:
Prevention of "white water mold" & "pink slime" is preferred over treatment. Follow these steps to help prevent white water mold:
1. Physically brush & clean ALL Spa surfaces weekly, including steps, jet recesses, & behind pillows
2. Expose ALL pool surfaces to as much sunlight as possible (sunlight & UV are natural
oxidizers)
3. Remove the lid from the skimmer to allow sunlight into the basket for several hours each
day ** INGROUND POOLS MUST USE EXTREME CAUTION in doing this in order to avoid
a person falling into or otherwise injuring themselves due to an open skimmer.
4. Regularly add oxidizing chemicals into the skimmer to purge & clean the filtration lines of
any bio-film*
5. When adding make-up water from the garden hose, allow the water to run for 2 to 3
minutes before putting the hose into the pool.
6. Regularly clean spa & hot tub toys & floats (use BioGuard® Stow Away)
7. Regularly clean pool solar blanket (use BioGuard® Stow Away)
8. Chemically clean pool filter every 4 to 6 weeks (use SpaGuard® Filter Cleaner or SoftSoak® Filter Cleaner)
9. Add regular Maintenance dosages of "Shock" (SpaGuard® Spa Shock, SpaGuard® Enhanced Shock, SpaGuard® Chlorinating Concentrate, SpaGuard® Brominating Concentrate or SoftSoak® Shock) every week as prescribed
10. Run the filter a minimum of 6 hours daily to prevent "dead spots" in the pool
11. Remember to clean & rinse the brushes, hoses & vacuums that you use to clean the spa
12. Leave as much of your spa equipment exposed to the sun
13. Keep the water balanced at all times. Recheck after heavy usage or rain or large "top-offs" of new water. Water balance refers to Free Available Sanitizer level, pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness.

How do I rid of the dirt at the bottom of my pool if all the automatic vacuum does is mix it?

coldmv

I am unsure if it's dirt, old DE, or algae. I am attempting to push all of it down the drain, but this also just mixes in with the water making clouds. Any advice?

Answer
First off i would use a regular pool vac and put your filter on waste and just get rid of it once and for all by slowly sucking it up (take your time as clouds happen when you go to fast). If your still using an old DE filter then personally id give it the old heave ho and get a sand filter as they are not that expensive and are much safer and easier to maintain then the DE filters especially since the dust they use to re coat them is considered a carcinogen.

If your making clouds chances are it isnt algae as it usually acts like super glue to the walls of your pool until you super chlorinate it into oblivion. Might be dirt but if it doesnt come up with the manual vacuuming i highly doubt it. If you do have a DE filter it might be junk that made it from the DE filter into the pool and thus always makes it way back in. If its a cartridge filter it could be your filter is clogged up and is thus missing material and just reshooting it out into the pool. Simply hose down a cartridge filter until clean with a pressure washer and reinstall.

Short Form Answer
1.) If you have a DE toss it and get a sand filter, much easier to maintain and safer to use
2.) If your not sure what it is in the bottom check your chlorine levels if they are non existent or low super chlorinate and see what happens to it then (whether it vacs up or not)
3.) Use a manual vac for cleanups and the auto vac for basic weekly maintenance when your not using the pool.

Can anyone tell me what the best automatic in-ground pool cleaner is?

automatic pool cleaner skimmer on Polaris 170 Raptor Automatic Pool Cleaner
automatic pool cleaner skimmer image

kittenscla

I just got an in-ground pool and am looking to purchase an automatic cleaner. I haved checked out all the info I can, but can't seem to come to a decision! I don't want to spend $700-$1000 on a product only to find out it doesn't work! I don't mind spending the money if I know it's going to be worth it!

Answer
Depends on the kind of dirt you need to pick up. Generally speaking, "suction side" cleaners that constantly vacuum your pool (hose goes into your skimmer) are best when you have mostly dust and dirt. They tend to have difficulty with larger debris like leaves and needles. If that is you main debris then I suggest a "pressure side" cleaner. Some of these have a booster pump, some don't. But they all use a hose with water pressure to propel them. They have a debris bag that will collect the leaves very well, but dust and dirt may go through the bag.

Simple directions for closing a pool for winter.?

luteachris

Please can I use the automatic cleaner for the leafs? There are not alot of them in their however it is already too cold to go in to get them. It does get very cold here. Also can I put a plate on the skimmer instead of draining below this. I have to buy water and don't want to waste if I don't have to.
Sorry the pool is new this year. It is an above ground 24 ft round.

Answer
Saving the water is wise. To remove the leaves Wal Mart or any pool place has a hand net type skimmer. Remove any mechanical skimmers and pumps drain the water from them so it does not freeze in them. Drain the water level down 4 to 6 inches from the swimming level. Put cover on the pool if you have an old auto tire inner tube fill with air and float it in the center of the pool and then put the pool cover on to keep the cover from sinking into the pool water when it rains or snows and from the weight of leaves on the pool cover. Thats basicly it untill spring and you need to begin the filters again to clean and shock the poool to swim in.

Maintenance on an inground pool?

automatic pool cleaner repair on Aqua-Vac Robotic Cleaner Caddy Cart RC99385
automatic pool cleaner repair image

Em

I have never owned an inground pool and am looking to purchase a home that has one. However, I don't know anything about how much money, trouble, and effort it takes to keep one up, as far as maintenance. Please give me a clue...?

Answer
Keeping water in it helps, you also need to keep the water stabilized, proper PH, chlorine level, acidity etc. You will need to clean the filter or replace the media, which ever the case maybe, every 2-6 weeks or so depending on usage, if its screened in etc. It will also need to be vacuumed or you will have to get an automatic pool cleaner (which requires maintenance of its own). And eventually you will need to resurface your pool or deck, repair tile, replace your pool pump and filter, repair broken return or intake lines, repair the lighting. If you live in a climate where if freezes you will have to winterize your pool, whatever that entails. You also have to deal with homeowners insurance rules and local laws concerning safety fences, alarms and other things, I am sure I am forgetting something.

I don't mean to scare you....it's pretty easy to do most of these things, I spend about 1.5 hours a week at the most on my pool, and it is affordable if you do it yourself. If you don't want to do the weekly maintenance yourself get a pool service, in my area of Florida it is about $15-$20 a week and they check all of the water quality perimeters and add the appropriate chemicals (that you supply) and vacuum.

how to care for an inground pool...plz help?

becca

ok so i am buying a new home in which includes an inground pool. the pool has been properly maintained so its not in need of repair or anything, i need to know how to maintain a pool's care. what chemicals i need to buy? and how often do i use them?
what could possibly make someone want to answer a question like the first person did?

Answer
The two main "cleaners" in your pool is the filter and the chemical sanitizer, the that chlorine or bromine. Both need to be working properly. The filter removes the "dead bodies" of the algae (that the chlorine killed) and well as other small debris, so it behooves you to run the filter often and long enough to completely cleanse the water. Size of pool and pump/filter determine the number of hours per week.

The chlorine will work the best in water of a certain pH level (acid/akaline). You need to test the water daily. Normally there is little change unless it has rained a lot or other factors. Testing also includes testing the chlorine level (or bromine, whatever you are using).

For bigger debris it is easier to skim it off with the long handled screens.

You do need to get to a pool supply store and see if they have a pamphlet on how to maintain a pool. They will also become your supplier for chemicals, advice and problem solving.

I haven't gotten to heaters, backwashing, etc. There are many web sites with pretty good advice on pool maintenance. You need to read many of these. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't. They mention automatic pool cleaners (bless the person who invented those), pool covers (mandatory) and cleaning the walls etc of the pool.

Yeah, come to think about it, maybe you do want to hire someone...(giggle) to do all the work.

Answer
Ask them..but if you can afford it ...DO IT! It is better to make sure you get what you want and not regret and try to add it on later. Pools settle and things are not the same.

They are a lot of work and expense...we had one for 25 years and we just filled it in two years ago. I am so relieved and so happy we did that. It was very expensive especially when the chlorine locked in. Man..sometimes it took over 2000 bucks of chemicals to get that unlocked and show a reading...and the water was beautiful and clear...and yet so unsafe no one could swim. It takes one to two weeks to get that cleared up.

Make sure they don't use lotion and make sure they wash their feet off when they go in. If they get anything like some kind of pesticide or something like that on their feet....you are in for one expensive week or two.

The neighbors would have their trees sprayed and taken care of and the air would drift it over into the pool....and we have three acres each...and that was it. It was horrible.

Lots of responsibility...and lots of expense......

What are the approximate costs for upkeep of an above ground pool?

Charmian O

My wife and I are looking at buying a house, and it comes with an above ground pool (Looks like about 15' x 30'. I've heard from a lot of people that the maintenance and upkeep of a pool is more expensive and time consuming than it's worth... but not one of the people I've heard that from has a pool. I know the insurance will be higher (Don't know how much, but I know it'll be higher)... but I don't know anything else. How much /month or /year is the cost of the chemicals and maintenance? How much time is involved in keeping it up? Thanks!

Answer
Total chemicals for an above ground pool in the snow belt should top $250 for the season. If you stay on top of the pool and test frequently this should really be $150. Testing takes 30 seconds and will tell you what to do if the water is not balanced. the more often you test and balance the cheaper the annual bill will be. If you attempt do maintain your pool once/ week you will have a few weeks when the water turns green. This will cost you $30-$50 and 2-4 hours of time to clean up the mess. If you and your wife are very busy people and cannot dedicate the time to test and balance you will have a nightmare. I tell my customers to test and balance chems every other day. If they have a party or itâs 100 degrees out then you want to do this daily. Cleaning the pool and filter will take you 1 hour per week (if you have many trees in your yard you may need to do this twice per week). Opening and closing a pool is very easy, however if you havenât done this pay somebody and watch!!!! We have hints about removing the cover without allowing the muck water to fall into the clean pool water. (roughly $175-$250)

I look at it two ways:

If you like the house but donât like the pool, tear it down; around Chicago the rate is $300- $700 for removal.

If you like it but cannot dedicate the time hire a svc company again in Chicago the rate is $35- $50 per weekly visit (this includes the cleaning).

Testing will take you ten times to understand fully (two weeks). All chemicals have instructions on the rear for the proper dosage.

The best product that will make your pool 50% less maintenance is an AUTOMATIC chemical feeder... this puts a constant amount of chlorine or bromine into your pool all the time. Most people screw up and water turns green because they forgot to add some chlorine... this way even if you forget to test a couple of days you know the pool is still having some chlorine added to it. These run between $50 and $100 installation is cake if you have a drill.

Good luck

Answer
Automatic cleaners increase the opportunity that your pool will always be "swim ready." Automatic cleaners today are sophisticated and reliable. There are many different types for all applications depending on the type of pool and your locality to suit your needs and existing equipment. Since it is not possible for your pool professional to be in your yard every day to ensure all debris is cleared, this is an excellent option to ensure that algae does not have a good chance of getting hold of your pool's finish. The most common types of algae are caused botanical debris settling in your pool. Algae is unsightly, unhealthy for both swimmers and the longevity of your pool's finish (plaster). Automatic cleaners are a very good option in avoiding algae and staining of your pool's finish.

Where is the best place to stay in Myrtle Beach? Should I rent a beach house or a condo?

cstrat513

Going at the end of may, early June. Need the name of some rental company's????

Answer
Elliot Beach Rentals. Garden City Realty does beach rentals. Barefoot vacations.

I suggest going to www.myrtlebeachlive.com and ording a totally free Myrtle Beach Stay and Play guide. It is packed with info about lodging options.

I never rent from one of these rental places. I always rent a place right on the beach at the Dayton House resort. www.daytonhouse.com. It is very clean, affordable, nice staff, computer access, very clean pools. I get an oceanfront efficiency and stay 8 nights. Anything over 7 is a automatic 25% off discount. It also is in a nice quiet location.

How much does an average inground swimming pool cost?

automatic pool cleaner prices on Manual Pool Cleaners, Price, Suppliers ,Manufacturers - Bizrice.com
automatic pool cleaner prices image

Kirsti

My family and I really want an inground pool, but we are looking to save money. I need a nice pool but at a great price.

Answer
Inground pools are quite a bit more expensive that above ground. I paid about $35k for mine about 10 years ago. But that's including all the associated costs involved ( concrete around the pool, lights around the pool, a small shed to house the pump, sand filter, and pool accessories, the wiring for everything, the building permits, and inspections, retractable pool cover, automatic pool cleaner, and other pool-related bits. I highly recommend *not* trying to contract out each part of the job, it's a headache, as certain people need to do their jobs at certain times during the construction, and alot of the time one company's ability to do their part of the job will be completely dependent upon when another company does their part of the job. If there's a single problem or hold up by one outfit the whole project is affected. I made that mistake, and if I had to do it again, I'd much rather pay the extra $1500 to have one company perform the entire job.

No way in hell you're getting a quality inground pool for $2000-$5000 though. Reaslistically, $15k-$20k will likely be about as low as you can expect.

Asking price for a 27 foot above ground swimming pool?

Dain K

I have a 27 foot above ground swimming pool (3 years old) that I am trying to sell. It is in very good condition with a pump/filter, solar and winter covers, and accessories such stairs and automatic cleaner. The liner is fine now, but it may need to be replaced when torn down, but no idea. Is $1500 too much to ask? $1000? $500? I'm clueless on this.

Answer
Dain, i already answered your question on this with your other question when you referred to your pool as a 24 foot Round pool.

I gave it a second thought after posting, and seeing this message, IF you want to sell your pool, or get rid of it, you might want to post an ad for used pool equipment. A Pump/motor usually goes for 3-400 bucks, and the filter could be a few hundred more, but the equipment is used, so if you get someone to buy it for 500 dollars you should consider yourself lucky. Place an add for the equipment, and as a bonus they can have the pool for free. you might get a taker, But refer to my other message where i talked about liability. You don't want to be held responsible when the pool leaves your yard, so should something happen in 2 weeks, whether it is faultyequipment or improper installation, just make sure you dont get caught up in it.

It makes no sense to try and make a few bucks back on your pool that is 3 years old, and then by some string of bad luck, have someone come knocking on your door looking for damages because the ladder or steps failed and someone got injured. Sure it could be from the new owner installing equipment improperly, and you have no control over it, But is it really worth the hassle? Sell your used equipment, people will buy it. Especially now where people are going to have equipment failures and problems from the past winter, and dismantle your pool and put it on the side of the road, i guarantee someone will load it and take it away, even if there is no equipment.

How much chlorine will I use in my pool?

automatic pool cartridge cleaner on TigerShark 2 MakoShark 2 KingShark KingShark 2

z400wood

We just bought a house in MI with a 16x32 inground pool. I am getting ready to buy chemicals for it. The pool has an automatic chlorinator and I am wondering whether or not to buy 3" or 1" tabs or the sticks or whatever else there is. Also how many pounds of chlorine will I go through in the summer running the pump for 12 hours a day. Any other pool tips or chemical advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
You definetly DO have to chlorinate a private residential pool, otherwise you will very quickly have a swamp rather than a swimming pool. Go with the 3" tabs, they dissolve less quickly so you won't have to add tabs but about every one to two weeks ( I have some pools on my route that I only have to add once a month). As far as how much to buy, as with everything, the more you buy the more you save. It does not expire so if you have some left at the end of the season, just store until the next.

As far as other tips, the key to keeping a nice pool if preventative maintenance ( as with any investment).
I recommend taking one day a week (only an hour or so) and perform maintenance:
*clean the water line (with a tile/vinyl cleaner from your local pool store)
*Remove large debris from bottom of pool with a leaf rake (large deep net that attaches to the end of telescopic pole)
*empty skimmer and pump baskets
*vacuum pool
*clean filter according to filter type (backwash sand filter, *clean cartridge elements in cartridge filter, and for DE backwash and recharge with DE)
*Test chemicals -- Test Chlorine and pH weekly, Total Alkalinty biweekly, and Calcium Hardness monthly.

Recommended chemical levels:
Chlorine: 1-5 ppm
pH: 7.2-7.6
Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm
Calcium Hardness: 200-300 ppm

In addition to chlorine, you will need to purchase other chemicals for balancing, namely Sodium Bicarbonate (for Total Alkalinity), Soda Ash (for pH), and Calcium Chloride( for calcium). If you would ever need to lower the pH, use Muriatic Acid.

You can buy these chemicals at your local pool store. They will most likely try to sell you BioGuard or some other brand of pool chemicals. The ones that I named are what we call bulk chemicals, they come in 50 lb. bags and are much less expensive. They are the exact same thing, you're just not paying for advertisement. Again they do not go bad, so you can save them for years. Just make sure you store chemicals out of the elements.

I recommend getting yourself a good test kit (the best is made by Taylor). Do not use test strips as they are difficult to read and often wrong.

I see that you are in michigan. If you happen to be near the Saginaw/ Bay City area there is a great company there called Cherokee Pools. They have a retail store and also do service if you would ever need any repair work done.( My husband got his start with them years ago and we now own our own business in Myrtle Beach).

If you have any other questions I would be more than happy to answer them.

What is the best way to remove leaves and rocks from the deep end of a swimming pool?

YahooGirl

My swimming poos is surrounded by three palm trees. As the wind blows, I get the long leaves in the pool. Also, the surrounding area is covered by decorative rock. I have tried the net, automatic pool cleaner, manually sucking them out with the pool equipment. Usually I have one of the kids swim to the bottom of the pool to get them out. Is there a better way?

Answer
a pool cover and reel would help with the leaves.a solar cover is fairly reasonable and the reel would make it easier to use.as for the rocks the kid retrieval system seems to work.you may want to see about removing the rocks from around the pool, especially if you have a vinyl liner.good luck

What is the best automatic pool cleaner?

N.
