Can an automatic pool cleaner (a polaris) cause a leak?

automatic pool cleaner for fiberglass pools on Polaris 180 - Automatic Pool Cleaner
automatic pool cleaner for fiberglass pools image

NDallasPun

I have an inground fiberglass pool and have been loosing about an inch of water a day. I read other answers and tried the bucket test and also marked the side of the pool with electrical tape to track.
I have noticed that my polaris has been shooting quite a bit of water out of the pool via splashing or getting stuck but the problem only began about a week and a half ago and I have had a polaris for years.
I completely shut the polaris off one morning before work just to test that theory. When I came home at the end of the day, the water level was fine! Then I turned the polaris on and after about an hour of running, the level dropped about a quarter of an inch.
I know water always flows through the polaris piping but could the surge in pressure after turning the polaris motor cause a minor crack to begin leaking?

Side note: my main drain line at the bottom of the pool has either clogged or collapsed but that has been the case for about a year and the pool has always looked crystal clear and maintained good water levels.
Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Answer
If the pool only leaks when the polaris pump is running it, it is almost certainly a break in the pipe between the booster pump and the pool. When the pump is running there is a lot mor pressure in the pipe so it will leak a lot quicker.
A leak detection company should be able to pin point where the leak is, and then a pool company can dig it up and fix it.

Look for wet soil in garden beds, etc. with the pump running.
Palm trees are the biggest culprit in breaking pool pipes.

i need to buy an auotmatic pool cleaner. i've heard some bad things about the polaris and i'm thinking of going with the kreepy krauly instead. has anyone used these? which one will last longer and work better?

Answer
Two different animals. Kreepy is a suctiom side cleaner. Polaris is pressure side. Polaris makes a bunch of models. Choosing which one is best for you is a challenge in itself. (Polaris also makes a suction side unit, by the way.) Personally I much prefer Kreepy over Polaris. It is simpler. Has one moving part. Easier to repair. Average repair is much cheaper than Polaris. Frankly, when I had my pool store I finally quit selling Polaris products. I wasn't happy with the overall quality of the units. Every one I sold became more of a liability for the store. I'd opt for Kreepy if I were you.

what's the best automatic pool cleaner money can buy?

Looking for a good pool cleaner, low on maintenence but high on effectiveness.

Answer
For suction side cleaners I like the Kreepy Krauly. For pressure side I'd go with Letro Legend.

what do u guys and gals think the best above ground AUTOMATIC pool cleaner is the best. i have a baracuda zippy now it did ok for a while now its just dead. please give me some SERIOUS answers. i know my kids can do it. im looking for some advice. thanks you in advance.

Answer
I do realize you said serious advice ... but I can't help myself. Actually I have a "spider" cleaner that I sometimes have used in my above ground pool - BUT ... in all seriousness - I now have a "pool boy" ... not the speedo kind - but a gentleman that comes weekly from my pool chemical supply place for a cost of only $35 weekly + chemicals. Money well spent! Just wanted to let you know to check into it because it is probably more affordable than you realize. The fellow brings chemicals and adds them as needed and that cost then is added to my charge ticket.

It is nice to not have to worry about time consuming (although relaxing) cleaning. It never gets out of hand due to weather or heat etc. All we have to do is come in from work & enjoy the water.

Good luck.

Can anyone make water spiral threw an automatic swimming pool cleaner's pipes?

pooltornad

My question is can you make the water in your automatic swimming pool cleaner's pipes spiral. Speeding up water flow, greater suction power, faster automatic swimming pool cleaner, a turning force is created on the swimming pool pipes.
The automatic swimming pool cleaner will be able to turn itself out of tight spots.

Answer
Try a Hayward Navigator, it turns itself out of steps and ledges and spends more time cleaning the pool!

You're welcome!!

How do i use the manual pool cleaner for my inground pool?

Aimee

How should i set the skimmer/pool drain valves? Should i turn off the pool drain and have all the water being sucked from one skimmer? or keep both skimmers sucking in water and leave the drain off?

Our automatic pool cleaner is not working correctly and i have never had to manually clean the pool before :-/

Answer
Skimmer/drain valve to all skimmer and then all suction to only one skimmer. This provides the maximum possible suction for the pool vac. If that turns out to be so much suction that it is hard to push the vac across the pool floor, then adjust the valve to allow a little suction at the other skimmer.

There isn't really a standard design for in ground pools - they have different configurations of drains, skimmers, pumps, filters. You find what works for yours and go with that.

Does anybody know of some sort of inexpensive siphon filtering device to clean my horse's water trough?

fleabag

My horse's water trough gets dirt in it often and settles on the bottom and its such a hassle to empty it out all the time and just get the dirt out or trying to get the dirt out with a net. I was wondering if there are any kind of devices that kind of act like a vacuum that can just suck up the dirt through a tube or something and cleans up the dirt. I guess kind of like an automatic pool cleaner. It would be nice if it could be inexpensive whatever it is. If anyone has any ideas please help me . Thank you!

Answer
Four suggestions:

1. From the kitchen gadgets section, get one of those very close mesh strainers - they come in all sizes. You dip it in, fish out the debris, and let the water run out.

2. Aquarium supplies - a fine mesh fish net. Same process.

3. Car supplies - they have inexpensive siphons for getting gas out of gas tanks. Use it to siphon out the dirt.

4. Any flexible hosing will also work. Get about a 4 to 6 foot piece, put one end in the bottom of the tank. Suck on the other end until the water comes about 3/4 of the way (Clear hose is best! available at hardware store) then quickly put that end on the ground. Gravity will siphon out as much water and debris as you need to.

These are all really inexpensive things that can help do the job. Good Luck!

Obsessive or Compulsive blinking?

best value automatic pool cleaner on RRP: $1,390.00 Our Price: $649.00 free shipping
best value automatic pool cleaner image

Cannibalis

When I was about five I was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I had been obsessively washing my hands to the point that they cracked and bled constantly. The pain didn't bother me as long as I was clean of germs. I was also deathly afraid of becoming sick.
Recently I've been diagnosed with Depression, Anxiety/Panic Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder.
I'm 16 now and I haven't really noticed a lot of big OCD quirks in years, except sometimes I'll get a sudden panic attack if I notice my room is a mess or my shelf is messy. I also am an obsessive hygienic and always have to take a shower before I go anywhere. I am overly conscious of how I smell, and I'm overly conscious of how my breath smells.

Anyway when I was little, I don't know the age but maybe somewhere around 8, I started paying extra attention to my blinking. My siblings made fun of me and called it the "Squint Blink" or "Squint Blinking" because I would blink really hard to where my eyebrows went down and my eyelids squished together. It became pretty much automatic and I found it nearly impossible to quit. I was eventually able to stop, but then it developed again when I was around 10 or 11. Maybe 12. And I was eventually able to stop myself again, though it was extremely difficult.
The thing is, though I was able to stop, sometimes I will start thinking about it -like right now- and I get the overwhelming urge to do it again. It's SO hard to keep myself from doing it. I get this feeling in my eyes like I really need to. That urge can go on for hours or even days.
Up until now I thought I was the only one who had that problem, but I started researching and discovered other people have that problem too.
My question is, does it have to do with OCD or one of my other problems, or could it be a Blinking Tic or something??

Answer
I have been diagnosed with depression and OCD, and have struggled with social anxiety. I used to have the repetitive behaviors referred to as "tics", so I feel my input may be of some value:

I believe that any disturbances within any person, no matter what the origin or manifestation (physical, emotional), MUST come out in some shape or form, sort of like certain laws of nature. Just as a pool of water will always ripple when a pebble is cast in, so will a person ripple when something is not right.

I think its very possible that your facial "tics", the blinking of the eyes, is a way for you to release "tension" of some kind, and by tension, I mean any kind of disturbance, although one that I think is more psychological in origin. I would also submit that its possible that your other compulsive behaviors, the excessive attention to hygeine and preoccupation with the order of your home, are along the same vein.

Another possibility is that these compulsive behaviors offer a distraction from something(s) you would rather not deal with.

Every human being encounters all kinds of stress in their lives (unless one is unable to experience stress; there are purported cases). What matters is how we are able to handle that stress. Will we be able to take what comes in stride and push onward, or will we shatter like a vase dropped from a table?

We all have different manifestations of coping behavior. Its possible that your facial tics and other obsessive compulsive behavior is your coping skill, albiet a difficult one.

As far as psychiatric jargon goes, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is defined by disturbing, intrusive thoughts and repetitive compulsive behaviors ultimately resulting from these thoughts. Do you experience intrusive thoughts, thoughts that may "pop" into your head seemingly out of nowhere? If so, are these thoughts difficult to get rid of, even if they make little sense?

How do I lower the alkalinity in my pool?

automatic pool cleaner stuck on Polaris P94 | Automatic Pool Cleaner | POLARIS USA
automatic pool cleaner stuck image

Tony

The alkalinity in my in ground pool (25K gallons) is very high. It takes 20 drops in the tester to produce clear test. I've already bought a new tester. My ph is normal. How do I lower the alkalinity without also lowering the PH too much? I have to add acid but won't that also lower th PH too much?

Answer
You can lower the alkalinity with muriatic acid. 1.3 pints per 10,000 gallons will lower it by 10ppm. 3.25 pints in your pool will lower it by 10ppm. To get to the level you need of approximately 100-120 you will need to use 26 pints of muriatic acid to reduce it by 80ppm or 3.25 gallons of liquid muriatic acid.

You are testing the TA and getting 200ppm for your inground pool right? Make sure you walk a perimeter around the pool while pouring this in and wear proper safety equipment (eye protection and gloves) as muriatic acid is a diluted form of hydrochloric acid. Make sure you turn off any automatic chlorinators or remove chlorine pucks/sticks from the pool and NEVER let muriatic acid come into direct contact with chlorine products. Once in the water it will play safe but outside of water it will create chlorine gas which will kill a human in a matter of minutes.

You can get muriatic acid from the pool store or a local hardware store (sold as a cleaning agent).

Would a Taiwanese Guys go for a black girl?

Nissoue

I know dat it is really weird. But That question is really stuck in my head for some time now. because i am planning to move to Taiwan and I was really wondering about that. If i want to move there and spend maybe the rest of my life there, I would really like to know if there would be a possibility that I might get in a relationship while I am there. So could anyone tell me a little about it? I would like to be ready when I go there.

Answer
It's true what other people are saying that it's hard to know for sure until you try, but I can also share some thoughts that might help (I've been here 7 years).

First of all: race. I have wondered if white foreigners are treated differently from black foreigners. I can say that Taiwanese people are generally very friendly and interested in people from "the West", though I don't believe the maids/laborers from poorer countries like Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines get the same level of respect. For example, I don't think America airs prime-time talk shows where rich white women complain about how lazy or incompetent their hispanic housemaids are, but I've seen the equivalent here. All that said, I believe it's more about economic status (and country of origin) than skin color.

I have a "light black" friend here (Afro-European mix) and I've asked him if he thinks girls treat him differently than a white guy. He doubts it. He's got looks and confidence, so he could probably overcome any bias if it were there.

I think the bigger issue is not your race but your sex. Many female foreign friends of mine have complained that all the foreign men are unavailable because they're dating Taiwanese girls, and the local men do not seem appealing. I think some of this may be because (I believe) that Asian men are unfairly seen in the West as lacking manliness when in fact they can be extremely manly. If you find Asian men attractive in spite of this cultural bias, then I think you will find that you have a large pool of suitors to choose from.

There are cultural differences too. To make a BIG generalization (don't take it too seriously), Asian men can be quite good at pampering their ladies, but they may not be so open to the "traditionally women's" tasks like cooking and cleaning. Traditional family values are strong here, and the man and woman each have their own roles. So you could say it is not as sexually liberated here as in the States, though things are slowly moving that way.

Guys will be interested in you, but they may feel a little intimidated (your automatic foreigner's reputation as a sex-crazed demon does not help this). You may need to move slowly and keep the guy at ease until he can open up with you more.

Lastly, some foreigners suspect that Taiwanese are just really good at hiding their racism behind a plastic smile. I tend not to believe this, but I think Lil Jay Zhou's comment is a funny coincidence. No one reading it could suspect he was the same guy who earlier said that white English teachers in Taiwan such as myself are all "rich, overpaid, alcoholic white-trash". Hopefully his bigotry is just the result of living in America too long and is not indicative of "real" Taiwanese.

Why does my Pool Filter fills with air within minutes? I can't see an obvious leak. How can I fix it?

automatic pool cleaner hose on Top Automatic Pool Cleaners - Popular Automatic Pool Cleaners ...
automatic pool cleaner hose image

Reiner

I have a pool filter that fills up with air very quickly. That means that most of the filter then is not used for filtering water. After I open the valve on top of the filter to remove the air it will fill up again after 5 minutes or so. There are no obvious leaks to see. I looked at the pump, at the filter itself, and where the ozonator is connected. Somewhere the air has to come in, but I don't know how to find out. Any suggestions appreciated on how to tackle this.

Answer
If you use the skimmer, check that it is well below the water line. If it is not, it will suck in air as the water is not sucked in fast enough.
If you use an automatic pool cleaner, check that all the hoses from the cleaner are in good shape (sometime they rupture at the base although they look fine).

I would just play around with the valves, putting 100% of the intake on one incomming pipe at a time. If you still get air coming in any configuration, you most likely have a leak around the pump and filter.

I have an in-ground vinyl liner pool that is 17x36. At its deepest point, it is 8.5 feet deep with sloped walls and tight corners going down. (Someone called it a diving pool?) I want one that is self contained and doesn't hook up to my filter. I was originally looking at the Dolphin Diagnostic Advantage (DL2019) In-Ground Robotic Pool Cleaner but am open for suggestions. Anyone have any experience with these or can throw me some pros or cons of a different type? I am not willing to spend more than a $1,000.00.

Please can I use the automatic cleaner for the leafs? There are not alot of them in their however it is already too cold to go in to get them. It does get very cold here. Also can I put a plate on the skimmer instead of draining below this. I have to buy water and don't want to waste if I don't have to.
Sorry the pool is new this year. It is an above ground 24 ft round.

Answer
Saving the water is wise. To remove the leaves Wal Mart or any pool place has a hand net type skimmer. Remove any mechanical skimmers and pumps drain the water from them so it does not freeze in them. Drain the water level down 4 to 6 inches from the swimming level. Put cover on the pool if you have an old auto tire inner tube fill with air and float it in the center of the pool and then put the pool cover on to keep the cover from sinking into the pool water when it rains or snows and from the weight of leaves on the pool cover. Thats basicly it untill spring and you need to begin the filters again to clean and shock the poool to swim in.
